i saw it but didn't finish it.

Yesturday, my boyfriend and I went to the theater to watch this. We were really hoping it would be good. But then half way through we couldn't take anymore of that waste. So we walked out and snuck into Silent Hill. Best decision ever. I'm not saying Silent Hill is a great movie. I'm just saying it's better than The Promise.

The graphics were horrible looking, the story could've been better, if it was executed well, and the acting reaked. I would suggest everyone to just save the 10 dollars and rent Hero.

I'll give you the only good side to this movie:
It works better than Sleeping Pills and Vodlka.

If you don't believe me or all the other people who said this movie was awful, then I suggest you watch it and judge for yourself. If you liked it, you're dead to me. But if you hated it, then I greet you as a friend.

God I wish I would have done the same but instead I stayed until the end thinking it might get better. IT DIDNT! This was a steaming pile of crap & I friggen love Asian movies of all types & own hundreds of them to prove it.

Just curious, where were you people from?

reply

Well, that really doesn't matter. I mean, if I was to say where I was from, you would say, "Well, that figures, [insert stereotype of where i'm from]."

This movie was horrible. The visuals and storyline were about as bad as any b-movie from over here.

reply

Uh, no, not really, because I hate the movie myself.

Im from Chicago & I've lived back & forth between Chicago & California for most of my life & I know a good movie when I see one & this film was a hot mess! That answer your question?

reply

yeah it's that bad it deserves a Golden Raspberry Award

I enjoyed Crouching Tiger, it was the first of its kind that I had seen. The goofy floaty martial arts were cute and fantastical and helped to make the story surreal.

But much like any new thing (sure, it wasn't new, just new to most US audiences) follow-ups feel like cheap knockoffs. I didn't much care for Hero, for example, as they really pushed the floaty silly fighting and aesthetics over plot.

The first 30 minutes of The Promise I was ... dismayed. The CGI effects were ridiculous and poorly executed all the way up through the first battle with the bulls.

After that they integrated the effects much better and I grew more accustomed to the abilities they were presenting. I was able to settle back into the story and really enjoy it and in the end I was very very happy with it.

The Promise lets you down early only to pick you up and carry you to a very beautiful and well-told tale of love and betrayal.

Highly recommended for those that are willing to change their initial impressions.

Hero was pretty... UNTIL A TRILLION ARROWS FELL OUT OF THE SKY... TWICE. I couldn't stand Hero.

The Promise did have graphic issues with the bull scene but the special effects don't really make much a of a difference to me. I appreciate them but I don't base my oppinions on films on the graphics.

I walked out at the 40 minute mark, which is remarkable, cause i really felt sick when i went home, and every time i think about it, it makes me vomit.
I hoped that it was a satirical film, but it wasn't, so there goes all the previous credentials that Chen kaige had, he is nothing now.

reply

Can not believe this is from the director of Farewell My Concubine.
Farewell My Concubine is worth 10.
The Promise is worth 1 ... since there is no 0 on the scale.

i guess i am dead then. ^ ^' x.x

I did finish watching it, but only while switching back and forth between subtitles and dubbing hoping for...I don't know what. I got through more from morbid fascination than anything else, I didn't enjoy it. Kind of like watching a 10 car pile up or a documentary on the rise of Nazi Germany. Just because China is pretty is no reason to watch this film. Watch a National Geographic special or a nature documentary instead. Movies are supposed to have interesting things happen in front of the scenery. That's what makes it a movie and not a travelouge.
