question abount main character(s)*spoiler*

I'm not entirely sure but I got the impression that the protagonist was not aware of the painter's being his brother until finding the photograph. If this was in fact the case, does it strike anyone else as odd that the main character was imbued with all the knowledge of the known world but oblivious to the fact that the 'chess master' was his sibling? I hope I'm missing something.
