Where was this movie filmed. It seems very familiar but I don't recognize any of the locations... this is bugging me, thanks.

I was wondering the same thing. If this is any help: In one of the last scenes, when the magazine sends him a letter accepting his story, it is addressed to Minnesota.

Yup. it was filmed in Minneapolis. That is our race track, Canterbury Park, in a city about 30 minutes south west of minneapolis, but the rest all seemed to be in the Mini Apple.

As a Minneapolis native, it's pretty easy to tell it's all filmed in Minnesota for some reason, even though it says L.A. The summit and grain belt signs at the bars gave it away at first, then the race track is canterbury, about 30 minutes south of Minneapolis. In a few car scenes you can recognize the roads, particularly S. Washington avenue, and Kirby Puckett Drive. Also, when they go out on Pierre's yacht, the go on our beautiful Lake Minnetonka. Im not even done with the movie yet, but if you need more references let me know, it's eerie to watch.

While Henry is sitting in his last apartment near the end, where there is a shot of him smoking near a window, the First National Bank neon sign in downtown St.Paul can be seen out the window, switching it's illumination.

It's not really Minneapolis. It's Saint Paul. He looks out of his window and there is Saint Paul. Also some of the streets and building are recognizable to me. I live in Saint Paul and commuted to down town for years. Don't know why it says LA.

It's mostly Minneapolis and a few parts of Saint Paul including the Court House and The Ace Bar which is called the Dubliner now.

False. It's mostly St. Paul. That's where the bar used as the main locale is, it's Kelly's Depot Bar and Grill. Dubliner is in the flick, but it's not the main bar. Most of it is in Lowertown St. Paul, a warehouse-type/gritty part of downtown St. Paul. It's where I live--within blocks from my apt, and most of the random shots of streets, the sky, bldgs. etc are from down around here. I remember when they were shooting. The hotel stuff is DT St. Paul--the nice one. The house is St. Paul. You get some setting shots of Mpls, the skyline, some of the job stuff (but some of that is shot in St. Paul), but not much is actually done there. The race track is the Twin Cities race track Canterbury. What you get is a mix of the two cities as if they were one with the suburban horse track, dominated by St. Paul.
