She shouldn't have let go of the fence...

I liked the movie, just wish the director had the guts to have Calista hold onto the fence... but I also know the economics of Hollywood - and the viewing public likes happy, or at least, neat and tidy endings...

btw, i bet the writer originally had her hold on, but the ending got changed...

It must have been a pretty weak fence if she could let go that easily.

why? what would holding on to the fence do for her character? in bruckner's charcter's eyes, she seemed like this beautiful strong girl. I thought the look on her face as she gripped on and let go of the fence portrayed that real well

reply

Well, I really don't think the current on that fence would have been so strong as to harm anyone with a more or less healthy heart. Its a normal electrical fence like for cows or horses or something - they're not dangerous...

Imo she was not at all trying to kill herself, but wanted to 'feel' her body, maybe she even believed a bit in the healing power myths...

Electrified fences for farms aren't 'hot' like powerlines. They have a pulsed charge that's kind of like a lowgrade stungun. Imagine the strongest static electricity you ever been hit with, double it, and that's about the strength.

On the farm I grew up on the pulse was once a second, and it definitely hurt, but wouldn't do any permanent damage. You respect the fenceline, but you sure don't have to fear it.

As for helping her MS, I have read apocryphal stories of electric fences helping people with arthritis, and I've read about small charges applied to traditional acupressure points being helpful. Whether the stories are true or not, or if there's any medical validity to them I don't know.

She was a blonde hillbilly and she thought "Well, I might as well give it a go."

Why wouldn't you? Nothing to lose.

I definitely dont think she ever thought about killing herself. The look that Calista and Audrey exchanged when Calista was headed for the fence at the end of the movie made me feel that she had moved on and was in the process of healing. Not that she was healing medically, but that she was not so dependent on other people anymore. She probably realized through the accident that she should not hold her loved ones back from there dreams. She never went to kill herself. I think holding the fence at the end was her final act to free herself from the restrictions she had been living under for so long.

It was symbolism that Calista didn't need Audrey to help her anymore. She told Mookie that she had never been there alone w/out Audrey, so the whole point of Calista smiling at Audrey before she went down to the electric fence was that she was telling Audrey, I'm proud of u and i can take care of myself and she did just that...she didnt need anyone to hold her up after she got zapped, like she did b4 with Mookie.

I have multiple sclerosis and it feels good getting a shock to your body. I bought a toy from Spencers that you have 2 joysticks and you see how long you can withstand a shock versus someone. Whenever my nerves is getting to me I use the machine and it makes me feel better. It was something suggested. I have not tried the bees but have heard that it works as well. Many people who have MS use the mild shock to help.
