Hind

Is it just me, or is the Mil Mi-24 Hind the most evil looking piece of machinery yet built by man?

Most awesome Looking piece of machinery built by man.

It's certainly cool, but I vote for the A10 Warthog. I've always loved those.

Hind and Warthog are my two favourite aircraft! i won't pick one over the other(okay, i love helicopters), it depends on the situation which i'd choose. if i could actually fly.

Afghan Mujahadeen: "Were not scared of the Soviets, but we are afraid of their helicopters". (Afghan conflict) - i guest its says it all.

The Sovjets did have a thing for cool yet menacing design, the Hind being a nice example of this.
But I thought The Hind originally had a chin-turret instead of fixed guns. Is the version in the movie a newer version? Would make sense, considering it's a recent movie.

I love the airport scene, just for showing real sovjet planes and tanks in the background, instead of remodelling western hardware like in Rambo III

Hind-D has the rotating turret with the 12.7-mm gun, Hind-F has the fixed side 30-mm GSh-30K twin-barrel cannon. both were deployed in the afghan war.

If you're gonna scare the *beep* out of a mujaheedin then nothing says "run home to momma before I chase you down and you die" like an Ugly callsign (AH64), that thing is just nasty. The A-10 is awesome as well.

The Mi-24 is a good balance between troop transport and gunship, even if it looks fat, but it's not that scary looking.

Man, the Hind is one badass looking chopper, more so than the Apache, probably due to having an even uglier nose and more predatory-looking paintjob.

Wouldn't suprise me. Guess it'd depend on how good of a shot you are.

Scared? Considering the fact that these brave warriors (Afghans) smoked the Russkies and are currently in the process of smoking you US troglodytes, I don't think you did a good job at all ....

The Russians weren't the type of military force built for fighting irregular wars in the long run, much like the US military, with the exception of the Spetsnaz units from GRU - not to mention the Afghan army at the time was basically useless.

More or less, the Russians suffered far less casualties than the Afghans did - more than 600 thousand served in Afghanistan and yet, less than 15 thousand were killed during the 10-year conflict. That's fairly low in terms of proportion - not to mention the Soviets never had more than 150 thousand troops stationed in Afghanistan at any point whereas the mujahideen were in the hundreds of thousands.

The mujahideen suffered far more, not to mention that they couldn't do so much against Soviet fighter jets (of the 450 aircraft destroyed, roughly 3/4 of them were helicopters in the duration of 10 years).

Strategically, the Soviets couldn't hope for much but in the tactical level, they pretty much smashed the mujahideen - I don't recall the latter

If anything, the mujahideen were the ones who didn't have the guts to face Soviet forces decisively in the open and had to resort to a long war of attrition just like any other insurgent army.

I'm not from the US, and they aren't brave, they're ignorant.

Your Islam is showing, "salim". The fact of the matter is that the USSR held it for 10 whole years, and moved out only when the USSR itself was on the verge of imminent collapse. I certainly wouldn't call it "smoking Russkies', you retarded *beep* Go back to humping camels in the desert.

For me, one of the coolest things about this movie was all the Hind shots.

For those who think it is fat, it is faster than the Apache.

stumbled across this title on Netflix and was curious if it featured the Hind, LOVE that machine, thanks for the confirmation!
may have to bump it to the top of the queue just for the Hind.

I spent a few years in Russia, working as part of a multi-national military unit that Dmitri Medvedev began. Being able to pilot the Mil Mi-24s, I was extremely suprised to see how easy it was to pilot them. I've been a helicopter pilot for a number of years but these would've been child's play to a beginner.
They're so robust, also. A friend of mine I made over there told me that during the Afghan War, an Mi-24 had its tail rotor shot up (I forget by what, could've been an Orelkon, but I honestly can't recall) and after putting it down in a small Soviet base in the heights, the crew cut apart a car's bonet and welded the sections onto the rotary pylon and used it as a rough & ready repair till they returned to Bagram.
Whether that as a story is true or not, I couldn't say with certainty, but it'd be a hell of a story. That being said, I've seen pictures and videos of damaged Hinds that have large chunks blown out of them, rotor-blades missing, cockpits damanged beyond recognition, the under-chassis torn to shreds; you name it. I feel safer in an Mi-24 then I do in the AAC's Ah-64 AW Apaches, without a doubt.

But in regards to the OP's point, I certainly agree. Like with many Russian vehicles, it has a predatory look to it. I also flew in the gunner's seat of an Mi-28 and I've seen the Kamov KA-50 Black Sharks and one of the KA-52 Alligators; all of the above look menacing and predatory, certainly not aircraft I'd like to see on a CAS run nearby.
Though again, I think much of Russia's tech has that appeal. From the early T-models through to the T-90A (especially the T-34) and the IV tanks to SU-37 Terminators and all of the MiG models. Hell, the Katusha (I forget the spelling, 'Stalin's' Organ, the WWII Soviet MRLS system) looks evil as hell!
Gotta say, that's certainly one of my favourite elements about the Russian military; practicallity and reliability with looks only a mother could love.

Thanx, nice reading.
