DOES HE ONLY MAKE STRAIGHT TO VIDEO NOW?

It seems like wesley snipes and steven segall only make straight to DVD movies now. What happened to them.

reply

You should see what's coming next... co-starring with Cynthia Rothrock :P

reply

yeah. looks like Wesley considers himself scrictly an action star now and since the lame-ass Blade:Trinity, his star has fallen exponentially with each release. His last four movies have been straight-2-video. Him and Segall should do a movie together but im sure their egos are much to big for that even if they're on the same team. Rothrock is the queen of S2V action movies. I guess this is where Snipes is gonna end up next to Dacascos, Van Damm, Don "The Dragon" Wilson and Gary Daniels.

Its a shame cuz Snipes started out as more than just an action hero. He's capable of good comedy and drama. I hear he has a big ego problem. That may be working against him. Hopefully, he'll get it together soon or he'll have to wait 10 yrs for Quentin Tarantino to revive his career. Pray for a quality-assured Blade IV.

Well, until then, there's always telemarketing...
-ABTRONIC 3000! Let's hear it from Wesley!

I agree - it's a shame as he's done some decent work and I can count the number of decent black movie actors on one hand these days ...

There are a lot of excellent black actors. What there aren't of lot of is directors and producers who will cast them in the blockbuster roles. But let me see if I can jog your memory:

Samuel L. Jackson
Will Smith
Queen Latifah
Kimberly Elise
Denzil Washington
Michael Beach
Andre Braugher
Isaiah Washington
Charles Dutton
Whoopi Goldberg
Wesley Snipes
Chi McBride
Kellita Smith
Jada Pinkett
Djimon Hounsou
Laurence Fishburne
James Earl Jones
Danny Glover
Morgan Freeman
Regina King
Taye Diggs
Dennis Haysbert
Cuba Gooding Jr.
Nia Long
Allen Payne
Courtney B. Vance
Louis Gossett Jr.
Cicely Tyson

I can go on, there are more than a handful.

Yeah mate sure! The actual reality of that list goes a little something like this . . .

Ving Rhames
Halle Berry
Samuel L. Jackson
Will Smith
Denzil Washington
Charles Dutton
Whoopi Goldberg
Wesley Snipes
Laurence Fishburne
James Earl Jones
Danny Glover
Morgan Freeman
Taye Diggs
Cuba Gooding Jr.
Nia Long
Louis Gossett Jr.

Plus he said actors.....that would mean males.....so the list looks more like this:
Ving Rhames
Samuel L. Jackson
Will Smith
Denzil Washington
Charles Dutton
Wesley Snipes
Laurence Fishburne
James Earl Jones
Danny Glover
Morgan Freeman
Taye Diggs
Cuba Gooding Jr.
Louis Gossett Jr.

and also, Gossett, Freeman, Glover, Jones, Fishburne, Washington, Jackson, and Rhames are all older and would be in different roles than Snipes.

So the list for young(er) name black actors would look more like this:
Will Smith
Wesley Snipes
Taye Diggs
Cuba Gooding Jr.

but lets face it, when was the last good, successful movie that Snipes, Diggs, or Gooding made?

So I guess Will Smith is the only one.

Unfortunately, in Hollywood these days roles are limited for the younger guys, especially guys who haven't made a big name for themselves. I was actually surprised nobody mentioned Derek Luke or for action movies Michael Jai White. It seems to me that the current trend to play "the black guy" these days is to look for the flavor of the week rapper because he will bring in the young moviegoers, which works well for the filmmakers because they get a great return on the movie, but sucks for the REAL movie fans who want to see REAL actors taking the parts. It saddens me to see young black actors who are talented lowered to roles as generic thugs and such. Cuba Gooding Jr. is an Oscar winner and he was lowered to movies like Boat Trip in theaters and has since been more or less DTV for the past few years.

ok I think Ive ranted enough....

I used to think that too, but when you think about it, what choice did he have? Blade Trinity was terrible because Snipes/Blade took a backseat to Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds, something they'd NEVER do to Superman or Batman. I wouldn't want to do Hollywood movies either if they treated me that way.

First off, Hollywood doesn't make as many shoot'em up action flicks as they used to. Instead they dump all their money in crappy horror remakes and crappy horror torture-porn flicks when they're not dumping their money in terrible romantic comedies, comic book adaptations, or fantasy Harry Potter/LOTR/Eragon type stuff.

If Snipes does consider himself an action star, then he doesn't have much of a place in Hollywood in 2007 as he would have 10 years ago. Only Jason Statham (and to a smaller extent Bruce Willis) seems to be making the kind of movies Snipes would/should right now. There are no more action stars like Clint Eastwood, Stallone, or Schwarzenegger, and most of the guys that could have replaced them like Vin Diesel chose to play in crappy movies like The Pacifier becasue family movies and comedies tent to make more money than action films and are cheaper to produce.

So the only way I can get my action fix is to see these straight to video Snipes films that may not be that good but at least give me the CGI-less action I'm not getting from the Hollywood films.

When I first saw this movie I was dissapointed. Why? Wesley Snipes. He could have done better. Everything about this movie was boring and pretty abysmal. The only thing I did like though was Wesley pissing off that Rumanian guy with "goatf*ucker" and "faq" insults in the guy's native language. I also wonder why no one on this board has mentioned anything about the interracial thing going on between Wesley and the co-actress. I thought it was nice and refreshing to see such chemistry. Because you all know how Hollywood feels about interracial stuff, not ofc when we're talking about Wesley Snipes. Anyways, I agree too that it's a bitch that both Wesley and Seagal makes straight to video movies nowadays. They are abit matured for these kind of action flicks though, I mean when was the last time you saw a good Jackie Chan action flick? 1997? Ever since Hollywood got their hands on him they turned him into some clown for kids. Crap in other words. They are getting older and so is their body. Action/fighting flicks doesn't last forever and it does run out in a short period too.

Big Screen release is the hottest for an actor however, hunderds of millions of dollars are made off of the world wide sales of the video. The tally of reciepts go on for 3 to 5 years after the movie has been released. From a business stand point this still makes Snipes, Van Damm and , Segal 3 of the hottest actors in hollywood. This is because you know that when you are searching the shelves of your local video store looking for something that you haven't seen or that isn't sold out and you run across one of these guys on the shelf you are going to give it a shot. Well, the funny thing is most movies make more on DVD now than they do in their theatrical run. So straight-to-video isn't quite the "kiss of death" it used to be. And while I'm sure some will disagree, I think the straight-to-video stuff he's done is pretty good. Unstoppable and 7 Seconds were decent action flicks. Pretty standard stuff, but entertaining enough for me. I haven't seen The Marksman yet, but I plan to rent that from the local Blockbuster sometime soon. I suspect it will be along the lines of the aformentioned movies.

Though it is a shame that his only movies that get theatrical releases these days are the Blade flicks...

I concur

True that!

Not just video, I've seen some of their films on TV.

I think it was all part of that Tax evasion scheme he had going,

And allegedly he's a dick on set so no one in Hollywood wants to work with him.
