Thoughts on Season 6

I just completed watching the final episode of Season 6. As usual, I didn't watch any episodes as they aired; I waited for the DVD release and then binge watched it all.

Well, that depends on whether you count All This and Gargantua-2 (2015) as part of Season 5 or Season 6. I did actually watch that when it aired. The IMDb lists "Gargantua-2" as Season 6, Ep. 0. But, for some reason, the DVD includes that episode in the "Season 5 Recap".

I thought it was a pretty good season overall, but I think I liked Season 5 better. Season 5 and Season 6 each had the equivalent of 10 half-hour episodes, but Season 6 seemed shorter. And even though The Devil's Grip (2013) was not the intended Season 5 finale, Red Means Stop (2016) seemed even less of a finale.

Now I get to watch all the episodes again with commentary. I find that the commentary is often as entertaining as the episodes themselves. Another reason I only watch this show on DVD.

I liked it but they didn't tie up a single loose end. It was like there should have been another episode or two.

Exactly. Jackson Publick had this to say on the subject:

The story we’re writing now would have been the season finale, but we didn’t get to it. We weren’t ready for it when it came time to write the last two scripts. And there was actually a little confusion for a while as to whether or not the Gargantua special counted against our 10-episode order, so we were writing like four different stories at the same time not knowing whether we had two scripts left or four.

When it turned out we only had two, we were like, “Alright, I guess we should do our finale.” And then we thought, “No, we haven’t really earned it yet. We need to flesh out this Monarch arc a little more....” So we made a judgement call and wrote two other stories that we were very excited about.

Both seasons 5 & 6 suffer from that problem. Season 5 ignored Monstroso for most of its course, then ended the whole matter in a short, unsatisfactory fashion. They pulled a dues ex machina with Molotov, and then left >that< storyline off the board for season 6.

Season 7 will have a lot of 'splaining to do. And they better not forget Dr. Orpheus this time.
