When will the english subtitled version be available ?

I purchased the russian language only version, as soon as it became available
on ebay. My russian language skill is very bad, but since I read the book, I could follow the story. This is by far the most impressive version on film.
Superior in any way to the 2 older versions.
Why is the russian movie hesitating with the english or northamerican release.
Well advertised, this movie would be a sure hit in northamerica.
I definately gonna buy the english subtitled or dubbed version.

It is the closest version to the book, as far as I could tell.
Not only because this is the longest version, it also has the
scenes very well researched. You will appreciate the richness of
the period details, which where also well represented in the first 2 versions,
but this version surely outdid them.
I also like the actress Chulpan Khamatova playing Lara.
She played it with a lot of heart and expressive emotions.
She is definately a rising super star, and she allready is one in germany and in russia. Very good in the movies "Good by Lenin", " Eine Liebe In Koenigsberg" and most of all "Land of the Deaf".
No american actress comes even close to her.

Hi Marcus
Yes, it contains 4 more battle scenes than the 1968 version, and 2 more than the british 2002 miniseries version. Nevertheless, it is the drama of the story
that makes this movie what it is. The battles in this movie are brief situations, just a bit longer and more elaborate than in the first 2 versions.
They are an important element but not the carrier of this movie.
If you like a lot of russian civil war action, watch "THE NINE LIVES OF NESTOR
MACHNOW" It's a miniseries about an russian anarchist, that at times comanded
a more lethal army than the reds in the years from 1918-1921. First an ally of the communist, later a betrayed and bitter enemy of communism.
I ordered this movie from oversystem.com for around $39.99. Look under the category "vojna". It's about 720 minutes long and action packed. The action
is awesome and can hold it's water against any current hollywood war flick.
The acting is pretty convincing (russian actors goe through long vigorous training at universities and theaters). The version I bought comes with
no english subtitles, anyway, you can follow the story without them pretty fairly. If there would be a version with english language, I would buy it
and watch it again. It's that good. The only thing that disturbed me, that
the brother killed Nestor Machnow's wife , a Nestor Machnow very much in love with his wife, did not really pursue the killer, nor put much effort into identifying the murder. Maybe that was part of his twisted character, I do not know.

I was also amazed by this movie, I think it is much better that other versions I've seen so far. It seems that lot's of Russian movies and books are not very well advertized here, maybe that' why it takes so long for them to make a translation.

reply

Anyone know if they've made the translation/subtitled version yet?

"Even in silence I listen to your dreams."

Keep checking those two sites:
http://www.alldvd.ca
or this one:
http://www.russiandvd.com

They are usually the quickest to release any russian movie with english subs,
and the most user friendly for english speaking clientel.
I got the new "Master and Margarita" miniseries from russiandvd.com just 6 weeks ago. It's nowhere else to be found, may it has popped up on ebay once or twice.

It's one I'd very much like to see, I noticed it after seeing Khamatova in "Goodbye Lenin!" (where she was also called Lara) and checking out her career here. It struck me it would likely be a very good adaptation.

This version does play on all DVD players:
NTSC all Region.
I also watched it, and my impression was, that Oleg Menschikov did not perform in it's best capacity, Chulpan Khamatova did.
Fazit, the chemistry un the older version with Omar Sharif and July Christie worked better.
Otherwise this miniseries is not bad, I would say 7/10 stars.

reply

Amazon.com now has the English subtitled version in NTSC. Search under "Doctor Zhivago with English Subtitles [4 DVD Box Set]"

I enjoyed this film and especially like the authentic (and splendid) Russian locations; with authentic Russian language. The subtitles are generally good, though something is always lost in the abbreviated translations you get in subtitles, especially with a complex language like Russian. Many Russian mannerisms and traditions are in this film which reflect Russian culture better than the other film versions.
