why does he say 'sorry' to ikumi at the end of the film?

i think its ikumi, im sure theres a really obvious answer to this.
i tried the commentary on the dvd but the guy thought it better to ramble on about how they got the film rew for this film than the actual film, so anyone here know?

I'm probably completely wrong but I think they'd been seeing each other and he was breaking up with her so he could "be with" Ryôko.
