Dissapointing but....

At least they were trying to pull off something ambitious and different than the usual Hollywood films coming out now. Maybe a better screenplay a better director and some minor changes and this could have been an all time great film.

how can you say the acting was awesome
it was mediocre at best
I could tell how it was going to end from about 3 minutes in
I think its excellent what they're doing and i love the idea
but why not employ professional actors that can sing not singers who THINK they can act
Angel?? Sorry where exactly was she supposed to be from because her accent faltered at every turn and her weak acting was only matched by an even weaker singing voice
The musical scenes in The church were great and the choreography was stunning as were the costumes and Macy Gray, it was just the story line, i mean can you honestly hold this up to any of the great musicals of our time, no and thats why when you ask people 9 out of ten will politely reply, no i haven't seen Idlewild and i haven't herd of it either

Actually I can and the movie is Hairspray. As for Outkast being too pop for hip hop fans I disagree because their popular music spans waaaaaaay past the three songs you mentioned as popular OutKast songs. OutKast's debut album created the foundation for southern hip hop and their songs flipped what people came to expect from hip hop albums.

Not knocking you or anything just do a bit more research first.

Yea Outkast are musical legends in my opinion. But I agree that the story wasn't great and the acting wasn't great as well either. But the selling point was the amazing visuals, historic costumes, and the today-ish(I know it's not a legit word, but you get the point LOL)style music mixed with a yesteryear's twist. Those were the highlights of the movie. Could have been a nearly flawless or a flawless film if the story and acting was better.

My heart goes out to all the talented black actors and actresses who can't get work because Producers feel the need to cast a bunch of musicians and rappers because they think it will help the box office.

Wait... OutKast doesn't get respect from Hiphop?! You're kidding, right? OutKast is a pioneer in Hiphop... they were the first Southern group to earn respect from Hiphop; they changed the face of Hiphop music when they dropped back in '94 and are still considered Hiphop's most innovative musicians... both Andre and Big Boi are considered among Hiphop's premier lyricists. Look on Amazon.com, 3 of their 5 albums have 5 stars. They were awarded classic status from the Source twice (the only southern artist other than Scarface to get classic status). OutKast is not only greatly respected and anticipated in Hiphop, they are only behind 2pac, Rakim and maybe Ice Cube as one of THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ACTS IN RAP HISTORY!!! Wow... I really hope you're a young kid or just new to the world of Hiphop...

It is a shame no one has been ambitious like this again. The Musical in a genre in desperate need of a revival and a reinvention.

"fetishistic"..?

"sexual connotations"..? "montage"..? (and still... "fetishistic"..?) What scene are you talking about..?

I don't know why you think dressing a corpse should be sexual...

As far as the director focusing too much on style... look at his history; I've never seen a music video that evokes emotion. Music videos killed music.

"I don't know why you think dressing a corpse should be sexual..."

J Rodo, what can I say, except: "This frequency is not transmitting." That's not what I was saying at all. When most people hear "fetishistic", they believe the speaker is implying something sexual. Since there was some confusion over the meaning of that sentence, I was responding to that. I meant "fetishistic" as "fixation on quirks, style over substance"---when a director can become fixated on producing very specific imagery, so much so, that they lose sight of what must be communicated between characters in a scene. Nomatter how fantastic a director thinks a scene will play-out with very specific imagery, sometimes concessions must be made for the sake of the story. That's what I was saying. The relationship between the two characters in this scene needed more time and backstory for it to feel more emotionally powerful. But the scene was very stylistic and someone has a good eye for design.

"Music videos killed music."

Some of them certainly don't do the song they're representing, justice. You want there to be harmony between song and video and the video must serve the song; otherwise, it's just a competition for attention from the audience. However, when it works, it's a very nice marriage of art forms. But it doesn't always work.

After clarification, I understand what you mean by "fetishistic" but am still confused by the presumed correlation between fetishism and sexuality.. I think you're stretching the concept of fetishism a little bit... other than that, though.. I do agree with you.

good writers use nuances and subtleties.... bad writers use caricatures and cliches.... that's basically what the characters and situations in this movie are.... hip hop has always been a genre that usurps from other genres.... andre steals heavily from george clinton as well as others... just like hey ya "borrowed heavily from devo and the techno bands....
the fact that so many black viewers love it doesn't surprise me... there's a formula for relating to black audiences... your either permeate your work heavily with god or jesus.... or your lean on cliche's that the black audience identifies with... it pains me that my people think that "meet the browns" is even remotely funny....
that said.... some of the musical numbers in the film are very good... especially the ones that don't try to infuse hip hop in the production... but even in these numbers you can tell that big boi and andre have seen Lackawanna Blues... and paid very... very close attention....
all in all.... it doesn't suck... i've seen plenty worse... but the story is amateurish.... and it's basically just a vanity piece for outcast....
