"PAINFULLY obvious" that these characters were pretending to be human? That seems like the overstatement of the year. Having just watched the (presumably) edited version that aired last night on the SciFi Channel, I can state with all confidence that the writing and direction of this movie is so disjointed that nothing is obvious at all. In fact, one would be much better arguing that the characters were in fact still human because the story is narrated from a point in the somewhat distant future (given that the main character references how the four people occasionally cross paths in various cities while they keep up their various fights to some level of success). Such statements would indicate that the characters MUST still be human.

Additionally, there was no indication anywhere that Devon had been exposed to the aliens and Daniel's father stated flat out that the aliens were not interested in her. However, being as the structure and internal logic of the movie are so fragile to begin with, such a "twist" would not have surprised me. The biggest gap here is how Harlan could have gotten away with faking it or, if he were not still entirely human, why he would be going along with killing the aliens and not sabotaging the film's heroes (which, as stated in the final narration, he does not do).

Also stated in the final narration is the fact that Devon is supporting Daniel in his endeavors to keep away from the aliens and assist Finley and Harlan when they can. While the assertions that Devon and Harlan are aliens might make for a thin excuse to create a sequel, there is nothing in the final act of this movie to support such a conclusion. At least not in the version of it that I watched in utter disbelief at its bizarrely disjointed plotting last night...
