Are these statements true?

I saw these scenes in one of the IMDb reviews. Fairly recent (Sept 2006).

Are these scenes really present in the film?

"++ Romain and his boyfriend (both showing erections) have explicit and unprotected sex, including Romain penetrating Sasha and inseminating him. ++ Romain sniffs cocaine, goes home, gets drunk and is grotesquely rude to his only sibling in front of his devoted parents +++ Romain has a love scene in a car with his father ++ Romain goes to bed with his naked grandmother ++ A waitress unknown to him asks Romain to inseminate her because her husband is sterile, Romain at first refuses, but later goes to bed with her and the husband, who (naturellement!) is ready to snog with Romain. (If you're still awake this scene is unintentionally hilarious: the waitress licks both their tongue-tips with the tip of hers. I think artificial insemination would have been preferable)."

I've at least seen three of Ozon's films and they are some scenes where they are fairly shocking (like the rabbit-butchering scene in Criminal Lovers). But the reviewer mentions "the son having a love scene in the car with his father." Is that with another man or was it really between him and his father??? Was it explicit or implied (God I hope its implied).

Well there is a gay love seen for sure, but I don't think you see any erection (at least on the DVD version in Japan that I saw). As for not protected and inseminating him, it's just ridiculous. It's sex between lovers who happen to be gay, so what are you expecting?

Romain sniffs cocaine, goes home, gets drunk and is grotesquely rude to his only sibling in front of his devoted parents +++

True.

++ Romain has a love scene in a car with his father

He hugs his dad in his car... The guy is about to die... It is a love scene but certainly not a sex scene. You gotta be a twisted mind to see it that way...

++ Romain goes to bed with his naked grandmother ++

At his grandma's place, he doesn't want to sleep alone and sneeks into his grandma's bedroom and like a child ask if he could sleep with her (remember he's gay). She tells him that she sleeps naked and he answers that he won't look :-)

A waitress unknown to him asks Romain to inseminate her because her husband is sterile, Romain at first refuses, but later goes to bed with her and the husband, who (naturellement!) is ready to snog with Romain.

Well the husband doesn't seem to be really ready to do this, but the guy wants to and the husband clearly doesn't want to let his wife alone, so be it...

(If you're still awake this scene is unintentionally hilarious: the waitress licks both their tongue-tips with the tip of hers. I think artificial insemination would have been preferable)."

Yeah probably.

Thanks for the clarification.

I wanted to see this film with my gay friend. But thinking of how young he is (only 16) and how graphic the contents were described above (not my words), I had second thoughts.

So you saw a DVD from Japan? I've wanted to buy the version sold in Canada (like any Ozon fan as it stays true to the Frenchness of the film).

I just watched the DVD (Region 1) and there is a glimpse of erection from both men in the love scene. Fleeting, but there. Also, the DVD extras contain a 'making-of' documentary that shows a much more graphic 'sex club' scene than the one in the film. The scene includes a young man in an S&M sling, about to be 'fisted' by an older guy in leather as Romain looks on. The preparations for this scene are frankly discussed with the potential actors, and there was talk of actually showing the beginnings of the act (using a double for the actor in sling) which never made it into either cut, apparently. Still, we get the donning of a rubber glove, the lubing of the fist, and the young man's naked bum before the action shifts focus. Before this, there was a bit of spanking in the sex 'cellar' that was toned down in the DVD proper. Another deleted scene shows the waitress's husband cruising Romain in the toilet of the restaurant he works at. It is not overt, but it explains why the husband is so ready to make the insemination a 'menage a trois'.

Still in all - a powerful film - even with the edits for mass market sensibilities and time constraints.

The main character takes you to some different places on his journey to accept his eventual death. Its common for people who are about to die to explore boundaries they have never experienced as part of their process of dying. The whole movie was done beautifully and all of the scenes that some would call "explicit" was artfully done. Yes, this movie is not for a 16-year-old boy. Wait until his is 18 and show him the movie. I think he would appreciate the parallels of coming to grips with death and coming to grips with ones sexual orientation. Acceptance of ones life is the ultimate message. I loved this film, and I do not think it got its props here in the US.

Love your response. Some things just make sense, if you're gay. But if you're bi, or straight, you don't. But really just makes sense. Thanks it was funny.

It's not a love scene and, with the way Romain is portrayed, it could be left up to interpretation. But if you read everything in the scene, from the conversation, to the look on Romains face, it could go either way. But I think it was just affection, not lust, or a sexual advance. I think it was masterfully done to make it appear open to both ideas. But clearly, to me, it was only affection. You have to remember what Romain is REALLY thinking about at the moment. That's were his head is and his father can't figure him out, but he knows something is up after what happened at the house. All of that is apart of that one moment.

YEP THIS HAPPENS. JUST COPE WITH IT

+Romain has a love scene in a car with his father
NO. MISINTERPRETATION. IT'S NOT A SEXUAL SCENE AT ALL.

++ Romain goes to bed with his naked grandmother
YES BUT NO SEXUAL

++ A waitress unknown to him asks Romain to inseminate her because her husband is sterile, Romain at first refuses, but later goes to bed with her and the husband, who (naturellement!) is ready to snog with Romain. YES. QUITE AN EROTIC SCENE

reply

Actually, if you look a bit closer, you'll see Romain is wearing a condom over his erection. Whether or not they have sex is another matter left to the film crew on set to dispel.
