Thank goodness for star ratings
I may never have seen this if it weren't for the three stars that this was rated on my onscreen guide. When someone has three stars, I can usually count on it being pretty good. And this certainly was. What a delightful film! I love the fact the main characters were all family members, and I loved what each and every one brought to the film.
It didn't surprise me that the two daughters are actresses, or that Emily really is on E.R. What did surprise me is that the parents aren't. I thought they were marvelous.
I enjoyed the contrast of L.A. and New York, as shown by the characters -- Emily with her new age stuff so typical of L.A. and the parents with their accents and demeanor so typical of New York. In fact, the parents took all that L.A. stuff a lot more in stride than I'd expect.
The ending was a little contrived, but I forgive it. The ride, such as it was, was with such real people -- people I feel I've met before. As someone else said, a "making of" documentary would be interesting. I'm curious how much was scripted and how one directs these various people.
Fantastic job on this film. I hope to see similar quirk, and other real life/fiction combos from him in the future.
