Seems like the kind of film festival programmers love

but just about everyone else hates.
Note to festival programmers, nebulous does not mean good. What's up with you people?

If most people tried to read Gravity's Rainbow, they would hate it. Yet most serious critics don't seem to share the opinion of the general public on that. Most people would loath the work of Duchamps if they had ever seen it. And yet most modern art critics admire him. The difference between those examples and art-films is that the general public does not read books or take any interest in art. They do, however, watch movies. It is inevitable that sooner or later they will accidentally see a film that does not attempt to reassure them with a neat plot arc or an obvious, literal interpretation. It is inevitable that some fraction of those who do will come onto an internet message boards and vent their frustration that not everyone shares their sensibilities.

Any work of art that reaches beyond obvious literalism or trite, needy attempts to entertain is going to be loathed by most people who are exposed to it. They will call it pretentious, or pointless, or self-indulgent. You can always count on that.

Some of us know better. That's "what's up" with us.

The kind of music I listen to is mostly bursts of raw static and quietly stressed noises. Most people would not even call it music. You can, if you are interested enough, find beauty in the most obscure and strange of things, and if you do that for long enough you will end up far, far off the beaten path, and in these places traditional "beats" and "plots" don't really matter any more. It doesn't mean you are better, or that it is just "wanking" as some put it who are not into it. It just means you've gone deeply into something that most people never will. Film is no different.

By the way, I thought this was a pretty flawed film; I didn't enjoy it much.
