Why do the soldiers call each other A-holes?

What's the deal with everyone calling each other A-holes? Aren't these guys supposed to be a team /comrades?
Was it some kind of thing SK soldiers did back in Vietnam often?

They don't really seem to be using it as a term of endearment either for most of the time it is spoken in the film either.

I watched the english subs version, maybe it was just a bad translation?

It kind of came off as retarded how often they say it, like a way how cheesey american horror movies throw in curse words just to get the R rating and appeal to teenage audiences where cussing is still taboo for them.

These guys don't show comraderie, because they aren't comrades.

The soldiers were all picked up from a South Korean hospital because no one else would join up on the mission. All the soldiers were their because they had contracted various forms of VD. They were all from different units.

Lt. Choi mission's tended to end up with everyone being dead, so he had to resort to bribing these soldiers into signing on.

Yeah they seemed to be just a bunch of misfit soldiers that were disposable and better off being out of the army anyways. It would make sense for them not to show respect to each other.

Well, all that 'calling each other a-hole' is actually in fact, a common thing in Korea (I'm korean myself). Its a bit like slang. They use swear words as both for slang friendly talk and insulting other people. But that depends on how well you're friends with them.

They were indeed quite poor-quality soldiers. Look at how they fought against those Vietcong upon arriving in the island. And they were all promised that if they sign up, they'd go back home but yea, only one guy survived.
