The black dog is an odd looking Newfoundland (clipped funny, lanky teenager or maybe a Newf/Labrador cross? - have 4 woolly Newfs here - well, 3.5 - all very asleep) and the little cutie is a West Highland Terrier (been looking at them for quite a while and wondering if I should get one/some and would the Westies totally wear out the Newfs - and me).

I don't know much about Westies but, I have a Scottish Terrier or Scottie and they have the best personalities. I have actually had two. The first one did not like other dogs at all but, he absolutly loved people. He was very loving. The one that I currently have likes other dogs and loves people. He loves to play but, is not very affectionate. Well, he is very affecionate.... he just doesn't like to hug much or anything. He is actually your typical boy, lol. He was raised around 3 other boys(people). Sometimes my brothers would be on the floor rough housing and wrestling and my Scottie would jump right in like he was one of the boys... very cute!
I would love to start raising Scotties myself. I don't know how they are compared to Westies but, I would say if Westies have even half of the fun loving personalities of Scotties... defintly get one or two or however many you want because they are worth it!!! I love my Scottie dearly! He is part of the family and I wouldn't trade him in for anything in the world! :)

I have two Westies, and they are great dogs. They are stubborn, hard to train, but incredibly sweet, little comedians. If you want a lap dog, this is NOT the dog for you. Terriers in general are very high maintenance. They shouldn't be left alone all day, they need plenty of exercise and attention. They are incredibly smart, sometimes aggressive towards other dogs (esp. big dogs), and should be watched around small children. My older pup LOVES kids, my younger girl is scared of them. They are too loud and fast for her, they maker her nervous.
Research the breed, and if this sounds like they would fit your lifestyle, check this out...

The black dog in the movie was played by two different black Newffies, about 6 mos old, which were adopted by the writer/director/producer of the movie and they both live with two other newffies on Gary David Goldberg's properties in the Santa Barbara area as well as Vermont, where he calls home.

The white dog is a Westie, a West Highland Terrier which is another great breed of dog, even if they can be a bit high strung at times, but that's not unusual with pure breed small dogs.
