why wasn't the gay teacher allowed to sit on the floor with the kids?

Beginning of the movie, Sarah and her assistant are sitting on the floor with the class, the other assistant who is gay is shown sitting on a chair in the background. Any theories why the filmmaker did not have him sitting with the kids?

Because the school were worried that the children might catch his gayness.

I presume that is the answer you were looking for so that you could throw a fit of self righteous indignation.

The glimpse you got of someone sitting on a chair in that scene was so short its amazing that it even registered.

I suspect that the reason was either or both of:

1) It would be absurd having three teachers for such a tiny group of children.
2) As he was much taller than the women who were already much taller than the children the scene would have been harder to frame well.

What is odd is that he was sitting there apparently doing nothing rather than teaching another group. But then again, I doubt the director was expecting that level of paranoid analysis from the audience.

What I found a bit unrealistic, for a movie that is so full of clichés (that don't detract from my viewing pleasure) is that the gay teacher has such a gorgeous boyfriend. I mean, as if.

Ya mean husband? They are both wearing wedding rings.

I guess it fits with that whole theme that real connection is not about looks. For that matter, the camera didn't soften on the faces of the older women - Dolly and Sarah - and I would say that is strikingly unusual. It made them look older than their professed ages, because women over 40 are never photographed that way in mainstream movies. Yes, Sarah is extremely attractive for her age, in all the standard ways of the day, but usually such facial lines and textures get well glossed over in production.
