While I think it was a "cutesy" movie, I agree with the first poster that John Cusack and Diane Lane's characters did not have chemistry. They never seemed comfortable with each other. John looked in the beginning like he was a stalker, and Diane seemed to have a lot with the character played by Dermott Mulroney. And to me they did! It seemed to me like the producers forced Mulroney's character to appear as a bad person so that Diane's character could go back to John's character. It looked forced-fed to me, because from the beginning she and Dermott Mulroney had lots of chemistry. She also seemed like she was trying hard to underplay herself, to appear as a weak divorcee, instead of the strong characters she normally plays. Think "Unfaithful". I think all three top characters were terribly miscast in this movie (I like all of them though, especially Mulroney). It was a nice enough movie if you didn't have anything to watch on TV. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it though.

I've had this DVD sitting on my shelf for almost a year because I too thought it would be too "cutesy". But since High Fidelity (with John Cusak) is one of my favorite flicks, I broke down and gave it a try. Glad I did. I'm a non-romantic kind of guy, but this one rates up there with my other favorite chick flick-The American President w/ Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. Could it be the strong, yet insecure women in the lead roles that make these two so watchable? I'm glad I did pay for it, it's a film that I'll put on when lady friends drop by.

It was excruciating to watch. As much as I love John Cusack, this is the worst Cusack film I've ever seen. Diane Lane simply didn't play off John Cusack well. The movie kept the student's father in as a love interest for way too long, sidelining John Cusack totally. Argh, I rented this movie only because of John Cusack, and it was horrible. Period.

I liked it. :) I DO like chick flicks...and although this was not the best...it was certainly better than a LoT of them! It's as good as...if not better than... John's "Serendipity"...Diane's "Under the Tuscan Sun"...or Dermot's "My Best Friend's Wedding".

I have just seen the last 20 minuets of this film and cant wait to see it, ALL of it next time.
How anyone could not like it? I`ll never know!

I agree with the previous poster... its a cute and fun movie. Its not meant to be paramount or anything.

The only thing I enjoyed in the movie (which I only watched out of loyalty to Cusack) was when they were driving around looking for condoms. I couldn't stop laughing. Condoms should be talked about more in movies and tv! I hate in the movies that people just start screwing and even worse sometime they show it in one shot, no fade away and it lasts for all of seven seconds. This can not be allowed to be shown as acceptable behavior :)

It seemed very stilted to me, like it was lurching from scene to scene. Almost like the parts were filmed years apart and then edited together...very odd and not enjoyable. How many times have we seen films JUST like this? and done so much better, too. It wasn't even funny. The dogs were quite cute I suppose.

OH MY GAWD!!! I thought this was one of the best movies I have seen in a while.!
I am almost 36, and divorced and I could relate to Diane Lane so much in this movie. Except I have a kid, and I look 25. She looked 40 plus.
But it's hard to find a good guy, and John Cusak is a doll

Life is like a wheel everything will change

I disagree with you, it was good and fun to watch....nothing at all wrong with it and as usual John Cusack was great to watch

reply

yea i thought it was pretty boring.

it was a good movie, funny and sweet, except for the excessive dating, AS IF she switched personality in the middle of the movie and went crazy dating, not believable, but over all i loved the movie... simple but sweet movie

I liked it. It was for an older generation who have seen it all and are now settling for something without thunderworks, and lots of subtlety.

I enjoyed it very much. It was a really funny movie and actually had more depth than Hollywood comedies usually have. I always like John Cusack, have never seen a movie where I didn't like him. Diane Lane did a very good characterization of a mature woman who is looking for a serious relationship (not like Sherry who is a lot younger and has done half an office).

The thing about this movie that bugs me and every other movie where someone needs to pick Person A or B, is that the other person always has to be a douchebag. If a girl had to choose between two nice guys, she would never ever be able to pick one over the other, because they are both nice. "Oh no! I can't possibly make my mind up, because neither is a douchebag." It's not like she can think about who she likes most, although she doesn't dislike any of them. Prove me wrong with examples of movies where that is not the case and I will be very grateful.
