correct term for character

Not certain, but folks who were entrusted with that responsibility were (and still are) called griots---before the advent of T.V., print and radio, they were entrusted with keeping track of the history of their own particular tribes and keeping the oral tradition alive---the West African griots are considered the precursors to today's rappers.
