So, how do we FIND it?

As far as I can tell, it was only released in ONE theater, and in ONE city.

If it's so great, why don't the producers make it available on DVD or cable, at least?
OR sell it on i-Tunes, perhaps?

reply

Sembene Ousmane believes that his films are purely African and are thus irrelevant to Westerners, so he almost exclusively distributes them to African theaters. I and many others would disagree-- these films are relevant for Westerners, too.
In addition, Sembene does not want to lose control over his art and sell out to a corporation, so he distributes them himself.
that said, you can find his films on VHS in many university film libraries if you have access. perhaps some local libraries would have them as well.

It did play at a few different film festivals in the US. Some of his other films are available on DVD now; but Netflix and Amazon have been listing the Moolaade DVD for a year or two as "release date unknown," but that they expect it to be available sometime. Wish they would release it already.

John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

The DVD for Moolaade is available at HMV stores in Canada, or more specifically, Toronto, Ontario.

However, you can also order the DVD from Amazon Canada for quite a cheap price (under $20 Canadian):

The DVD is distributed by Warner Home Video/Seville Pictures. Moolaade is in its original language in 2.0 stereo with optional English and French subtitles, and original 16 x 9/1:85:1 widescreen aspect ratio.

In terms of bonus features, there's a French "Making of Moolaade" featurette which includes interviews with the cast and crew.

Hope that helps!

I saw it at a Blockbuster, and I borrowed it from my local public library.

This movie is airing in HD on Japanese subscription TV satellite service on September 12th 2007. http://www.wowow.co.jp/schedule/ghtml/020265001V1.html

And it's being broadcast in Belgium, our (Flemish) public tv station Canvas is broadcasting it for the 2nd time tonight Sunday 18 May '08 at 21:25, so people in Flanders and the Netherlands, and perhaps other Neighbouring countries, can watch it.

And people with satellite dish could perhaps get it on BVN, the joint public channel from Holland's & Flanders' public networks for Dutch & Flemings abroad)

If you either can read Dutch (subtitles) or understand French and/or Bambara (spoken), that is of course.

UPDATE: No, BVN hasn't scheduled the film. I guess it's not really "the best of Flanders & the Netherlands"

This movie played at an indie cinema in Washington, DC when I lived there in 2004. I wanted to see it, but unfortunately I missed it. I have been waiting and waiting for it to come on DVD. I recently checked Blockbuster here in Phoenix, and they looked at me like I was from another planet. So I joined Netflix and rented it as my first DVD. Just finished watching it. What an incredible film. I cried for the first time in years. It is outstanding. See it!!

I also got it from my local library.

http://www.cine3mondes.com/ if you want to buy it. I'm afraid teh site is in French but unless you're very special, a little common sense should get you around it without too much problem.
Have a search in local public and university libraries if you want to rent/borrow it. Any university offering African Studies is likely to have it.

Regarding Sembene exclusively releasing in Africa - this is not true. There are distribution companies which have distributed his films in Europe and North America but there is usually a maximum of 3 prints in any one country at any one time - meaning it will only be in as many cinemas. Have a look to see if there is an African Film festival near you, these are a good way to meet others who are interested in African film thereby extending your "borrowing library"...
