If it says "Special Edition", then it is the version that was released in theaters in 1997, with new scenes and some additional digital effects. There was a version that was released on VHS in 1995, which was THX enhanced. There were no additonal scenes or new effects, however the picture and sound were enhanced for better viewing. It seemed like everyone and their brother got a copy of those tapes for Christmas 1995. In 1997 came the Special Edition, with additonal scenes and effects (i.e. Greedo shooting first, adding Jabba in ANH). Last year, the DVDs came out, with even MORE changes and modifications (i.e. adding Ian McDiarmand into the scene with the Emporer in Empire, and adding Hayden Christiansen in Jedi).
