WANT THE REAL DIRT ON DYNASTY?

I worked on DYNASTY as the on set, company acting coach and was the eyes and ears on the set for the producers. I spent every day on the set, in the actors' dressing rooms and in all the "behind closed doors sessions" relating to the production of the show. I looked forward to seeing DYNASTY THE MAKING OF A GUILTY PLEASURE and instead of coming away feeling fulfilled, I was so disappointed. The people involved in the making of this "fictionalized" account, got it so wrong. I know, I was there, and could tell you the real dirt-the stuff that only I heard while in Joan or Linda's dressing room - and for the record- Linda did not bake goodies for people and Joan never called the show DIE-NASTY- with her Brit accent she called it DIN-NISTY- so the line reading in last night's movie where Joan says: "I put the Nasty into Dynasty" is incorrect- besides I know for a fact that she didn't say that. But if you want to know why I know that maybe you'll ask, or maybe even consider reading a book I might write about my days and nights with the guilty pleasure of the 1980s.
Richard.

reply

I think you should write a book!

I have read the accounts from Joan Collins, Kate O'Mara etc But would love to read some of the behind the scenes dirt that they didn't write about.

reply

So many people have told me to write a book about my adventures of working on the set of DYNASTY. I even turned down the National Enquirer the year they asked for a sneak peek at the return from the Moldavia cliff hanger before it aired. Aaron Spelling sent me a wonderful gift and handwritten note telling me how much he apreciated my loyality to "not tell stories out of school." But now, after all these years, I don't think I would hurt anyone-- besides I love Joan so much I would never do a "tell all" dishy book that would hurt her.
I loved Kate O'Mara as well and working with Joan and Kate was like doing high camp Noel Coward.
So many people have said they hated the recent movie, I wonder if a book would be popular. Any thoughts?

reply

Write the book! I'll buy a copy.

reply

At this point anything done with a shred of sincerity would be appreciated by us longtime Dynasty fans. Our favorite show has taken such a beating over the years, first with the abrupt cancellation in '89, the Reunion debacle, and now this crap excuse for a "teleplay." Plus considering that trends return to vogue about every twenty years, the time is perfect for a resurgence in popularity of the Number One show of 1985. :)

reply

It Would be of great interest to me! :)

What did you actually do on the show btw?

reply

Hi r-kennedy1983,
I was the Producer's Associate (the eyes and ears on the set for the producers) as well as the on set, company acting coach (official title: Dialogue Director).
What I did on the show was work as the liasion between the set (meaning the Actors and Directors) and the creative staff( meaning the Writers and Producers.) I prepared the actors for every scene (coaching their performance- I taught Joan how to do a Diva twirl without getting her wig all twisted)and took care of any problems that arose on the set and needed to be handled with the producer's or writer's. Now those were some cat fights to talk about.
What I'm hearing more and more is that there is an interest in a book if I write one so I'm seriously considering it. How do you like the title: "My Adventures As The The Real Alexis Colby."?
Take care,
Richard

reply

Hi RJOstlund

Your posts are great, I love the insight into the behind the scenes antics.

However we get so many mixed messages from various books, TV shows etc etc, and we need more detail to be convinced that what you say is really what happened. Therefore I think a book is the only option. And I can’t wait lol

reply

Hey r_kennedy1983,
Thanks for the kind words and supportive encouragement for my writing that book. Another little tid-bid that I think will inform people that my stories are true- The night Joan wanted to leave early she asked Linda if it was ok if I read the off camera lines of Alexis for Linda's close up (they edit out my voice when they edit the film together). Linda said: "Of course Joan, go home, Richard does a better Alexis than you do anyway." Well, that created a cat fight. But at the end of that day's shooting, Linda gave me an autographed picture that says "You're the best Alexis." and Joan gave me an autographed picture that says: "You took the words right out of my mouth." Should those photos be on the cover of my book?
Love chatting with you.
Richard

reply

What a kewl story! Bet most people can't imagine Linda being so Bitchy!

When you say "Catfight" what do you mean? Because I'm the biggest Joan fan in the world and I can't quite imagine her getting into a fight! Linda on the other hand I probablt can.

The signed pics should be included! maybe on the cover. But you should write a book anyway!

reply

My big question is "Did Joan Collins really feel good about Linda leaving as it was shown in the movie?" Did they have a heart-to-heart with Joan encouraging her to leave? Of course, it couldn't have been the way the film depicted it in any case. I'm of two minds and would love to hear your take. Either Joan was upset because she knew it would end the three-cornered aspect that made the show a hit to begin with or she was pleased because she thought she'd get more attention and airtime (which she didn't, they gave Linda's airtime to Stephanie Beacham.)

Hi, RJOstlund!

Who did you like working with the most?

reply

Hi CJR2,
I loved working with Joan- her instincts were always spot on. Her boundless energy was a thrill and her sense of humor is unmatched. All of the cast members were fun to work with- I adore John James. Michael Nader is a sweetheart and John Forsythe is the dearest most gentlemanly of gentlemen. Heather was a kick in the pants- always. And Emma Samms is a doll. I would work with any of them again in a heartbeat, but to pick my favorite I would have to say Joan.

Richard

thanks so much for filling the void left by this movie. i really wondered about the depiction of the show being solely written by richard shapiro, and here you refer to the overturning writing staff. what was the real deal and is any writer ever that irreplaceable?

reply

Hi gtnn,
I'm very happy to be "filling the void" as you say. My work on DYNASTY was my "Hollywood Heyday experience" and I treasure every minute of that opportunity. It saddens me when I see "behind the scenes" movies that get it so wrong!
To answer your question - unfortunately no writer is irreplaceable (except of course the creative genius writer who realy is irreplaceable - but there are so many producers out there who don't believe a creative genius in the form of a writer is irreplaceable). Richard Shapiro is such a creative genius- and a dear sweet man. But it saddens me to see a movie about DYNASTY in which the credit for writing a specific episode is given to the wrong writer. Ed DeBlasio--also a wonderful, kind and gentle man wrote THE ROYAL WEDDING cliffhanger - which I believe is the only episode that actually hit #1 (which is what the recent movie depicted as the great quest of the producers). Another thing that saddened me about the movie was that there was no mention of the two writers (husband and wife team Eileen and Bob Pollack) who created the character of Alexis. However, the movie placed balme on Richard Shapiro for writing Linda Evans' character into a story line where she was locked in an attic for far too long. Mr. Shaprio should not have been "blamed" for that because he did not write those episodes either. The writing team of Diana Gould and Dennis Hamner wrote the "locked in the attic" episodes.
I really need to write that book, huh?

reply

Hi, Richard!

I really wanted to see the movie, but was unable because I was on vacation visiting relatives. Why didn't Joan and Linda not get along?

reply

Hey There CJR2,
Well you didn't miss much by not seeing the movie. The simple answer to your question,is that Joan was always made to feel left out of the close knit relationship between John and Linda. Joan always felt that the two of them banded together to present a united front when discussing ideas about the creative aspects of the show, which made Joan feel as if she were left to stand up for ideas on her own. Another insider bit of info. is that Linda was contracted to always be the "highest paid" female star of the show, so no matter what Joan asked for in terms of money, Linda was always guaranteed to make at least one dollar more - that was Linda's contract from the beginning - before Joan joined the cast.
As always,
Richard

Hi Hilljayne,
It is true that Al Corley was that up in arms. But there was more to his being fired than just his complaining to the producers. He did return for the reunion movie (replacing Jack Coleman- who replaced him during the original run of the series). I am holding back some of those details for my book.
I'm meeting with a publisher this week to discuss my book proposal so, I won't give out any of those details until I know for sure what this publisher says about what, if anything I should be saying to wet the appetites of possible book buyers.
I'll keep you posted,

Hi Richard,

I just love reading your insight into the true happenings behind the scenes. Just curious- do you know in terms of rank- (ex. #25, #44, or whatever) that the "Dynasty" teleplay movie placed in the Nielsens for the week? I can't seem to find that information anywhere online, although I heard it didn't do well. I have to say that I hated it. I was a HUGE "Dynasty" fan, and I noticed so many things that they got wrong. Sammy Jo was NOT at the Moldavian wedding. She was back in Denver prepping Rita to act like Krystle. Remember they had someone say more blood was needed on Heather during the movie? Wrong! Also, Michael Nader as Dex was NOT in "Dynasty: The Reunion" in 1991. The actor who portrayed Michael Nader in this awful film was seen standing in the background laughing and clapping after Joan and Linda filmed their Krystle and Alexis catfight in the wardrobe room. These are only two of at least six or seven things I noticed. If this done on ABC, the network the show originally aired on, can't they get things right? Or maybe they think there are no current fans who will remember anything. Wrong again!

I was curious to know if you know of any plans for the cast to gather for a reunion to discuss favorite stories, show scenes, do bloopers or outtakes, etc. That would be fun. The reunion show they just aired like this for "Dallas" was really well done. It did well in the ratings too- like #20 for the week.

Finally, definitely write a book. I would by it immediately!

Take care,

Joel

Hi Joel,
Yes, I do know the Nielsen ranking of the DYANASTY movie- it was ranked 67 with a 5.52 viewer rating - that is really, really bad. Even re-runs of JOEY did better.
You are also correct about Heather (Sammy Jo) not being in Moldavia for the 'blood scene." The "put more blood on so-and-so" scene actually did happen, but it was not the producer Esther Schapiro telling the make up people where to put blood on different characters (as it was depicted in this horrbily done movie). The producer who went from character to character was the producer who was my immediate boss (I was the Producer's Associate) and her name is Elaine Rich. Together we went from actor to actor and placed blood on different characters. The scene depicted in this movie did happen- but it was not Heather who groaned when told there would be more blood on Sammy Jo. However, that is one of my favorite stories - I intend to put it in my book but if you'd like to guess as to which character was actually told "put more blood on..." I will fill you in on the response from the real performer who had "more blood" added.
Although, you did mix up the actors who did not return for the reunion. Michael Nader (Dex) did return, it was Gordon Thomson (Adam) who was replaced at the last minute due to his being under contract for the day-time soap he was doing and none of the producers from either show could work around the two demanding shooting schedules for Gordon. And Al Corley (Steven) came back for the reunion instead of Jack Coleman (who was Al's replacement during the original run of the series).
As for the depiction of the "last cat fight" - that scene was shot late at night (actually early in the morning) in a wherehouse in downtown Los Angeles (not even on a sound stage) and no none stayed around for the shooting of that scene unless they actually needed to be there- it was a hot July day when the shoot day began and most people were too tired to stick around until the wee hours of the morning unless they needed to be there- it was not the last scene shot during the shooting of the reunion and most people had to return to work the next day -so when their work was done on that day, they left. But for the purposes of "drama" in this recetnt movie- they wanted to make it look like it was the "big finish" and everyone watched. Yeah right, as if anyone sticks around their place of work when they don't need to be there.
Why ABC allowed the movie to get it so wrong I won't know until I have lunch with the SR. VP of Movies for ABC next week. I want to ask him the same question.
To your other question- I doubt that the cast will ever reunite for another show about Dynasty. Everyone is so scattered to the winds by now, and unless the money is good enough, no one would want to come back- except unless maybe if Aaron Spelling asked them as a favor to him-- but even then, I'd bet that the actors would ask for a ton of money that no one would be willing to pay.
And last- don't expect to ever see an out-take reel - we used to do them every season (and I have copies of them)but when one was leaked to the movie rag magazines, Mr. Spelling decided to stop allowing out take reels.
I am meeting this week with a publisher about my book proposal- I'll let you know if there will be a book.
Take care,
Richard

Richard,

Hi. Thanks so much for all the interesting facts! I do have to correct you on one thing, though. When "Dynasty: The Reunion" aired in 1991, Michael Nader (Dex) was not in it. I have the movie on tape and watched it recently. An insignificant woman character commented on Dex in the movie, saying to a man she was with, that "he didn't fare well", referring to the fall he and Alexis took from the balcony. It was said that he turned in mid-air and let Alexis fall on him (um-okay- ha! ha!). It didn't specifically say he died, though, probably in case they wanted to bring his character back if they chose to do another reunion movie (which they didn't). Yes, I do remember Robin Sachs replacing Gordon Thomson for the movie, though, and that Gordon was very upset that the work schedule between his daytime soap and "Dynasty" couldn't be worked out.

It's a shame that the actors would want so much money just to do a reminiscing special reunion on "Dynasty". I don't think the audience likes reunion movies with new stories, but they like it when the cast gets together and talks about the show, showing scenes, etc. That's why the "Dallas" reunion did so well recently- because it wasn't a new story, but a fun cast reunion. You would think its been long enough that they'd want to see each other and reminisce and give this to the audience that so loved "Dynasty". Sometimes it shouldn't be about millions of dollars. You know what I mean?

Anyway, thanks again for your posts! I hope to read more soon!

Joel,
Thanks for jogging my memory about Michael Nader. I had remembered it differently (but it was 13 years ago). In my head I could see myself running lines with the actors in the back road leading up to the Doheny mansion (a location we used for many exterior and interior shots that were supposed to be in Switzerland I think). As I am remembering it, I was running those lines with Michael Nader, John James and Robin Sachs and the scene was with Dex, Adam and Jeff planning an attack on the "evil corporation's" HQ -- but now that you've jogged my memory, I do remember that Michael wasn't in the reunion- the scene I'm remembering had John James commenting to me that during the regular series this scene would have been given to Michael (Dex) because they were doing "commando" type action work --running across roof tops and such-- thanks to your reminding me, I do remember now that Michael did not come back for the reunion. Unitl you jogged my memory, I would have bet good money on having worked with Michael on the reunion.
Working on the reunion was not fun- I was one of four of the creative staff of the original series who returned for the reunion. Working on the regular sereies was like family- the reunion was not the family I worked with during the regular run of the series and was such a disappointing expereince. I guess I blocked out Michael's not returning.
We shot the reunion in the summer of 1991 and I had just finished working on KNOTS LANDING and FALCON CREST and had so many actors, characters and story lines running through my head at that point, I guess I just forgot that Michael didn't return for the reunion.
Thanks for reminding me. I'm going to go back through my snap shots of me on the set with everyone during the reunion and refresh my memory so that I don't get the facts wrong again.
As always,
Richard

Michael Nader aka Dex wasn't in the Reunion! Or if he was his scenes were cut!

reply

Hi r_kennedy1983,
You are correct, Michael Nader did not return for the reunion. I just had my memory jogged for me. I was thinking of a particular scene that I remembered working on with Michael, John James and Robin Sachs (who played Adam in the reunion). But now that I've been reminded of the reunion cast, I was remembering it incorrectly. We shot the reunion in the summer of 1991 and I had just finished working on KNOTS LANDING and FALCON CREST, so I had too many actors, characters and story lines running through my head-- and it was 13 years ago- so my memory failed me. You are correct, Michael Nader did not appear in the reunion mini-series.
Before I actually sit down to write my book I will go through all my snap shots taken on the set so that my memory does not fail me again.
Thanks for keeping me focused.
As always,
Richard

I wondered why they left Pamela's departure out of the movie too. She was a wonderful Fallon and played the part with delicious naughtiness. The producers tried and tried to talk her into coming back but, Pamela was married to a wealthy man and didn't have to work.
Emma became one of my best friends when she came to replace Pamela. I adore Emma. And she was such a god sport about the whole "space ship" story line that Dyansty had to take on after the Colby's was cancelled and Emma and John James returned to Dynasty.

reply

I certainly can't wait for the book. Maybe you could include the behind the scenes stories from other shows you worked on to expand your potential audience. Although I'm sure that Dynasty has a big enough fan base on it's own.

reply

Hi r_kennedy1983,
I think you're right about Dynasty having a large enough fan base on its own in regard to a book. However, since I trained on DALLAS, worked as an alternate on KNOTS LANDING and when DYNASTY was over I moved over to FALCON CREST, I have the distiction of having worked on all the top night time dramas - and some of the cross over stuff from behind the scenes are interesting- such as the party I went to with Joan where Nicolette Sheridan arrived and immediately the "young new vixen" from KNOTS LANDING was giving Joan, the regining "Queen Bee vixen" a run for her money. Or when I attended Nicolette's wedding to Harry Hamlin and Jackie Collins sat next to me (Joan was not invited) - oh the stories I could tell.
I'm talking to a publisher next week to figure out if my "little stories" from behind the scenes could actually be expanded into a book. From what I see written on these boards I think I have a book in me.
Thanks,
Richard

Back to the Moldavia "put more blood on so-and-so" bit, I would guess that the groaning star was Ali MacGraw as she has seemed bitter about the way it all happened. I might have thought Catherine Oxenberg but I didn't think her contract was up at that point so she shouldn't have been worried. Though I've understood since then that many contracts were up in the air, except Joan, John, Linda. Do I have my facts together?

reply

Correct- it was Ali. Elaine Rich, the producer who actually did the "put more blood on ..." scene went over to Ali and said to the make up man "I want a bullett hole right here." and pointed to the middle of Ali's forehead,. Ali turned to John James (we all called him JJ) and said: "I don't think I'm coming back next season, do you?"
You do have your facts right about the contracts - in fact, Joan's contract being so solid is what caused the legal battle when she went to the south of France to shoot a movie during hiatus and could not return on time to shoot the first episode of the following season.

Hey Richard

Thank you very much

Hi TVGuy 1010,
Joan is fabulous. I adore her and always will. Yes she is full of joie de vivre. I've always said that she is the only person I've met who has more energy than I do. Her instincts are always right on the money.
About the cosmetic surgery-- she once confided in me that she would never have work done because she is too afraid. And, I believe her. The last time I saw her at a party I hosted at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel here in LA she still looked fabulous and was just as energetic as ever.
She never thought of Dynasty as her last shot. When she took the part she thought it was only for 6 episodes, so she didn't even get a house in LA- she rented an apt. near the studio. She was thrilled when the role of Alexis turned the show around and made it a successsful show for everyone-including herself.
I've always said that I would work with Joan again in a heartbeat.
About my book - I'm afraid that people will want "dirt" on Joan and everything I have to say about Joan is positive and upbeat. I adore her. Do you think people would want to read a book about the "nice" Joan or do they want stories about a "nasty, evil" Joan?
Thanks,
Richard

Hi movieman7800,
I have never heard anyone say that Heather is a very self absorbed person. I love Heather. She is sweet, bubbly, interested in everything about everybody. Heather has a great sense of humor about herself and life in general. A little story about Heather that would illustrate her thoughtfulness and kindness. While we were shooting the Reunion, I was participating in the AIDS Walk fundraiser here in L.A. I asked all of the cast members to sposor me. Heather asked me to come to her last. I didn't know why at the time. I collected money from everyone (the smallest amount given by a cast member was $1,000- the amount most of the actors gave- some gave $2,000). After collecting from everyone else I went to Heather. She asked what was the most given, I said $2,000. Heather immediately wrote a check for $5,000 -- handed it to me and said: "I wanted to be the one who gave the most." That's why she wanted me to collect from everyone else first. Maybe that could be misconstrued as "self-absorbed" but I didn't see it that way.
Thanks,
Richard

The British comedy team French and Saunders did a spoof of the Collins' sisters rise to fame and fortune called Lucky Bitches. One scene shows Jennifer Saunders as Joan graciously accepting Aaron Spelling's offer via telephone: "What! Die-Nahsty? Dee-Nahsty? Ok, I'll give it a go." I thought this scene was funny as is, until I read someone's posting stating that Joan Collins pronounced it Din-Nasty. When French and Saunders skewer something, they do it thoroughly, let me tell you! :)

Great to hear all your comments Richard. I know that Joan is a very sweet and caring lady, very energetic and full of fun. Joan is from outer space - so unique. grand and different from anyone else. She brought glamour, style and excitement back to Hollywood. She is still great. Did anyone see the recent film "These old broads" with Joan, Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds and Shirley MacLaine. Joan ruled the show. She was far the best, the funniest and the most beautiful of them all - although I like the other actresses too. Joan is just unique. ,
