Val is out Aiden is in

I worked on the set today, and Val Kilmer has been replaced by Aiden Quinn. I guess that Val was too much of a primadonna!!!

reply

Any delays of shooting will be expected?
I think it is from Jun 17 - Jun 27 according to another message.

Thanks

Val Kilmer is out? I just thought Greg Kennear has been replaced by Aiden Quinn!

reply

Never knew Kinnear was associated with the project. I just know that Quinn replaced Kilmer and when we were shooting you could tell that Quinn was not very familiar with the script. Don't get me wrong, I was impressed with his abilities, but the whole day seemed like a rough rehearsal. Alot of takes for every scene, I think that Aidan would be a good director.

reply

Shouldn't be any delays in shooting, just alot of long days. Quinn stepped right into the part, but in yesterday's scenes they had to rehearse each one about 4-5 times, not to mention 5-10 takes. They weren't difficult scenes at all, just a Chinese director, German/French Camera man, and a lead actor from Penn.

reply

Val Kilmer replaced Kinnear who was no longer available.

What can you tell us about the characters, esp. Meryl's role?

This is the official breakdown of the basic story. Inspired by the true story of Lu Gang, DARK MATTER tells the story of Liu Xing (Liu Ye), one of thousands of Chinese academics awarded special visa status in the 1990’s to study in the United States. A promising graduate student in physics, Liu Xing’s goal is to win the Nobel Prize.

At university, Liu Xing devotes himself to research on the origins of the universe for the eminent and charming Professor Jacob Reiser(Quinn). He rises quickly to the top, establishing himself as the star pupil through his brilliant aptitude and hard work.

Liu Xing boasts to his family in China of his rapid academic progress, sending money home and promising them a life in America very soon. But his pride is tempered by his struggle to understand the social and political dynamics of American university life. Joanna Silver (Streep), a wealthy socialite and patron of the university, reaches out to befriend Liu Xing. A woman of great passions and a fascination for China, Joanna devotes her time to helping the Chinese students as they assimilate into American culture.

Shortly into his studies, Liu Xing fixates on the Dark Matter theory, one of the great unchartered areas of physics. Excitedly, he announces to Professor Reiser that he wants to pursue Dark Matter for his thesis. To Liu Xing’s dismay, Reiser discourages him; instead, he demands Liu Xing pursue topics that support his own research, specifically the Reiser Model. Against Reiser’s wishes, Liu Xing publishes a brilliant article on Dark Matter, but instead of finding success, he is hit with insurmountable obstacles. Soon, his dreams of a brilliant career are dashed and ultimately, destroyed. With nothing, Liu Xing lashes out at his former mentor and colleagues with tragic and devastating consequences.

Quinn's character keeps trying to Americanize Liu Xing throughout the movie, and there is a side conflict between Dr. Reiser (Quinn), and his former mentor Pannu (Avari). I will not spoil the story by giving the ending away, just in case you don't know, but I think that it will be a great movie when completed. There is one sort of comedic scene in which a drunk, nerdy, white professor is rapping at a cocktail party following a conference on the early universe.

Thanks.
This is the most detailed Introduction about this movie I've ever read.

How is Liu Ye doing in the crew? He told his friends that is going well with Aiden.

I'm going to fly to Beijing next month to see his stage show from Canada. That's why I was worrying about the shooting schedule.

reply

Thank you for the compliment about my details of the movie. I think that he is a very good actor. Very serious about his craft. He is quite shy, and likes to do private scene rehearsals without any extra people aroud to distract him. I am not familiar with his work prior to this, but I do know that he is in another film right now. I'm not sure about that schedule.

reply

Thanks a lot, sean. Actually this is Liu Ye that I know.

Is June 27th the last day that the crew will be in Orem?
Are you going move to any other places after Orem's shooting?
Somebody said the shooting will be done in the middle of July, is this true?

Too many questions. Sorry.

reply

Sorry, I have been off for the last couple of days.
#1. We will be at UVSC tomorrow June 28th.

#2. There will be more locations after that, but those are usually kept secret until the night before shooting so that only people associated with the film know about it. Especially when you have world famous talent like Meryl Streep, and Aidan Quinn.

#3. Mid July is when the first unit filming should wrap, but there will still be some 2nd unit work left.

Sorry that I took so long to respond, the days off were needed.

reply

Will u still have 2 days off every week with this new situation?
When r u coming to the college tomorrow?

reply

Does anyone know why Kilmer dropped out? What were the circumstances?

Thank you in advance.

reply

I don't know 100%, but the buzz on set is that he wanted everything his way and that didn't fly with Shi-Zheng Chen, the director. Chinese, as well as Japonese, filmakers take their work very seriously, and they usually don't become, or tolerate, people who believe that they are royalty because of their talents. The asian peoples tend to be alot more humble that western cultures. They do expect a level of respect similar to our military in that there is a vertical chain of communication which must be followed. Val Kilmer, while a great actor in my book, is very high on himself and I can see where there would have been alot of "behind the scenes" drama on set had he kept the role. As I stated earlier though, I don't know for sure whose choice it was, or the reason, for the role to pass on to Aidan Quinn.

reply

I understood Val was out, because of a scheduling conflict with the McMurtry miniseries (Comanche Moon) being filmed in New Mexico right now. Had he filmed any Dark Matter scenes?

Kris

reply

That may be correct, it seems that scheduling conflicts always come up during the summer filming season with busy actors. He hadn't done any scenes, and Aidan was hired just days before his filming began. I hope that I didn't come off seeming like I was slamming Val, I was just relaying what was being said by the A.D. on set. The "official reason", the gossip reason, and the actual reason why someone leaves are often three different things. Only the people directly involved know for sure.

reply

Thanks, Sean!

reply

As for days off, one never knows for sure from day to day. As for UVSC I am not there until Friday because we are having trouble getting enough extras (hard to believe at a college).

reply

U mean they don't have enough students on campus? I can be an extra, I live here in Provo.

reply

They have enough now, but if you would like, call Aaron Yun @ 427-3356. It's a Utah County number. We are filming today at the college, but call time for extras was at 8:30 A.M. Good Luck

reply

LOL - love the credits now. Aidan Quinn is cast as Reiser, and Val Kilmer is cast as...Aidan Quinn?

reply

The official site has removed Kilmer's credit from the site at:

In addition some clarification... Kilmer is still on set in New Mexico for Commanche Moon. It now appears there was no conflict. Dark Matter was originally set to start filming a month earlier, and Kilmer was to film Dark Matter before going directly to Commanche Moon, but when filming for Dark Matter was briefly pushed back he wound up having two productions going at the same time. He previously had done two films concurrently in 1995 with the end of Batman Forever and the start of Heat, but both were filmed in LA. With these two productions far apart, Kilmer was forced to drop out of Dark Matter and remained with Commanche Moon secondary to his commitment with the New Mexico Film Investment Program. New Mexico's Film Investment Program and Val Kilmer have previously collaberated on Ron Howard's The Missing and Blind Horizon.

Thanks, It's nice to know the truth.
