well, let me tell you about 'Hitler-ish' American professors..........

I have been in a similar situation, but I didn't go on a killing rampage.

This very famous Amrican professor at GA-Tech hired me without even reading my CV properly. All my original ideas not only got turned down one by one, but on top of that it made my boss more and more offended and hateful towards me. He hired only colored people from third-world, who massage his ego and say "yes sir", "yes sir" all day round. He follows one blind direction of research that he has been doing for ever, over and over and over, and forces his group to work only in that direction. Anybody with exceptional views are considered enemy. "You work for me, you will do only this and nothing else."

He hired me on "dog-salary", even a dog wouldn't be satisfied with that salary. When I told other Americans outside the University about the amount of my salary, they first thought it's per week! When I said, it's per month, they couldn't believe it, they thought it's a lie. I paid a huge amount of tax, huge amount of house-rent, power, gas, water, heating..., my bank balance was always negative, so I eat only one meal per day. He forced me to work in the week-end.

Then one day all hell broke loose, I had an exploding breakthrough in my research results that comes maybe once in a century, and you know what he did? He gave it to his favorite junior student!

But I didn't go on a killing rampage. I was devastated, had nervous-breakdown, but I stood up again, put all these behind me, moved to Europe, continued my research career peacefull and successfully, and never looked back to this Hitler again.

Who can tell? This professor seemed very jovial on the outside, just like Aidan Quinn's character. Popular, respected, friendly, cheerful guy, but trust me, you better watch out the teeth and claws. And this is just one example out of thousands out there.

I'm sorry. Yes, I'm sure this happens a lot. One reason I love nursing is because it's one of the few subjects you can teach at college level without needing a doctorate and all of the pointless, dispiriting crap that goes with it.

that was totally my question, and the movie didn't explain that at all. A huge flaw.

thanks for posting this because i was wondering if professors would really be such massive (very bad word here.)

Also because i am glad to see that even if a professor does behave this way, it's possible to find funding and a position somewhere else.

that seemed a big flaw in the movie to me, because if the main character was so brilliant surely someone somewhere would appreciate it and hire him. especially since he'd already been published in a major journal.

good for you for sticking with it!

Yes, there most definitely are professors out there that are bullies. Many of them are jealous of their students. Many of the mare thieves and liars. Many of them are sadistic. Many of them like to inflict what was done to them on their students.

However, I've experienced professors like this of all nationalities. It is not just American professors.

Yes, this is where I had a huge question as well. Exactly how does a grad student get published in a major scientific journal without credentials and without the support of his thesis board? Highly unlikely, if even possible. Artistic licence. What is more likely is what the OP cites - that a major breakthrough is reassigned to a favored student, or appropriated as the professor's own. And even if you publish, you can bet your professor's name will be on that research along with yours. That's life in academia.

You should dedicate a blog to his reputation on the internet.

I agree with you! Sorry to hear! Some professors can be very egotistical although many are very generous. Universities are just another institution supporting racism, believe it or not. Sadly.
