Meryl

How big is Meryl's part in this?

I believe she has a supporting role.

How was the film as a whole? I haven't had a chance to get my hands on a copy yet.

I've been hearing mixed reviews.

hahaha...dark and depressing seems to sum up my career as well. :)

I have a small scene with Liu at the end of the film but haven't seen it yet since I couldn't get up to Sundance last year. It's good to get an unbiased opinion. You can't get the truth from friends since they feel obliged to sugar coat things.

Thank you again.

Back to the original question, Meryl's role is the film is supporting and she doesn't make a major contribution to the story line, however is does have a few good scenes towards the end of the movie. My guess is, Meryl probably signed on to raise money and get the film green lighted.

I don't think the movie will make anyone's list of favorite Meryl films, but I do believe it to be worth the watch.

reply

Oh cool, you were that nerdy guy who awkwardly complimented Liu on his article at the end of the movie, right? I saw you.

reply

Yes. That was me. I had a larger part originally but then my part got almost completely written out. I spent almost 2 years auditioning for this small role. The film underwent many re-writes.

Thanks for noticing me. :)

Have you seen the film yet?

reply

Yes. I finally bought the film and watched it. I thought it was beautifully done. Meryl was wonderful as was Aiden Quinn and Erick Avery. I thought Liu was really good. I wish the movie had done better but under the circumstances I'm just glad it was released at all.

Thank you for loving the movie guys! I'm really proud to be a part of it.

I disagree. I think that she has the most poignancy of anyone in the film.

reply

Although Meryl's screen time isn't very long, she does impact the film with her mere presence. Poignancy...nice word. I like that.

Meryl's role is extremely important, as she acts as a bridge between cultures. Although she and her husband obviously spent a lot of time overseas, her husband remains untouched, while Chinese culture has permeated her life. She is the one who tries to give him courage to continue. That scene with the cosmetics is especially heartbreaking, with Meryl doing such a wonderful job, proving she can be a supporting player instead of the lead actress.

By the way, I, too, noticed the student complimenting him on his paper~a nice moment.

I was confused at the end when Meryl is doing some kind of Tai-Chi yoga on her lawn and suddenly out-of-the-blue realizes that something was desperately wrong with the student and goes hurrying over to the campus to intervene. What was the catalyst?

reply

I didn't get the either, she is in solitude on this beautiful mountain and then all of sudden is driving like Steve McQueen for no reason.

I found the film very uneven and disappointing.

reply

what i got from that was when she was doing tai-chi she glanced at her hands and im sure lui was still on her mind so maybe she thought of his hands shaking as a sign of a nervous breakdown along with all the things he didnt say. im glad i didnt read what this story was about when i watched on wmor tv because i thought he was going ot kill himself.

i thought it was a good movie and wish it had done better.

reply

I'm with you. And my response to the original poster-Who the %^& cares?

reply

i agree with shea_825 ... Meryl's role in this movie was a side role in the story, but in fact she was the essence of this film... she was our eyes and ears and our view of this terrible event, she is the heart and the humanity

reply

Indeed. Meryl brought humanity to this film that would have been sadly lacking otherwise. It's one of her lesser films, in my opinion, but it still worth watching to see her.
