Couldn't Relate

I know, here it is 10 years after the movie was released, and I just saw it recently. Oh well.

Unfortunately, I couldn't relate to any of the characters in the movie. It felt like this was one of those movies that came out of the writer and/or director's personal experiences, to one degree or another. Don't get me wrong; there is nothing wrong with that. I very often enjoy such movies. But not this one. I couldn't relate to either of the main characters or their families; they resembled no one in my life, and weren't interesting enough to me to make me care about them. For example, movies about overbearing mothers are a dime a dozen. There was nothing original or interesting about that character or plot point for me.

I felt the ending was telegraphed, too. I saw it coming a mile away. Again, that is often OK, too, but not for me in this case.

As a tangent, the old woman in the mental institution belonged in a nursing home. It was obvious she just needed full-time care, and was never going to be cured of her mental illness.

I gave the movie 5 stars. For those of you who liked the movie, good. I'm glad for you. It just didn't work for me.
