Zoe's t-shirt SPOILERS!

It is years since anyone has posted, but something at the end really confused me.

Moz says he murdered the first two and had the third lined up.

But one thing confused me--it came up earlier and also at the end.

It was thought that Fred had murdered Zoe because his DNA was all over her, including her top. But the cops say that's not evidence, because he was her boyfriend at one time.

But we know (and it's mentioned later) that she had only bought the top less than an hour previously at the stall and changed into it in her friend's car on the way home.

They still discounted Fred (or the police were not made privy to the fact that the top was new just in the last hour.)

Yet, as is mentioned toward the end, Fred's DNA couldn't be the top that way, unless he'd done it, because the top was completely new and they had broken up sometime prior.

And Moz's DNA was NOT on the top, even though he purportedly killed her.

So who killed Zoe?

Was it Fred AND Moz? Or Fred? And Moz got jealous of his friend in some kind of bizarre way and continued the killing spree to other women in Fred's sphere? Like the mom?

Guess I need to read the book.

In the book it was Fred but I can't remember how they worked it out in the movie. Nicci French typically writes the police as thick and smug when confronted with a complicated crime. They tend to bumble around, pouncing on the first solution that presents itself, even if it is proven it can't be the right one. And then a plucky heroine comes along and solves the crime for them and puts them all to shame.
