the writing/ Anne Hathaway's acting suck
Austen is one of the cleverest, sharpest writers in the Western canon, and it's also no secret that she was incredibly intellectual. So why, oh why, is the dialogue in this movie so wanting?! And why, oh why, did they cast an actress who piddles around looking comatose throughout the movie?! There is none of the energy which Austen gives her heroines. Obviously the filmmakers think a woman being cutesy (which Hathaway only manages occasionally; mostly she just behaves as though she's been drugged) is the same as a woman having superior wit. Even without better writing, there are a number of actresses who could have done much more with this role. For god's sake, even Keira Knightley and Gwyneth Paltrow, neither of whom I like very much, were acceptable as Elizabeth Bennett and Emma Woodhouse, respectively. Poor James McAvoy--whose acting was terrific despite the horrible script--to be cast alongside such a boring and charmless person.
