Another martial arts film based on a true story is the Jean-Claude Van Damm film "Bloodsport" (1988) about the Kumite champion Frank Dux.

I love that movie Bloodsport, and I'm still a big fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme. The great thing about Van Damme is that he has real skill in martial arts, unlike pretty much every other action-movie star of the eighties. (Cough, Steven Seagal, cough). But when the end credits came up, and it said the movie was based on the "true" story of Frank Dux I laughed so hard popcorn came up my nose. It was like saying Star Wars is based on a true story. Frank Dux is obviously just a teller of tall tales, to put it politely.

But getting back to the subject of this thread, if you liked this movie I would highly recommend the recent film Kuro-Obi. The english title is Black Belt, and of course you can read all about it here on IMDB. It's a Karate movie set in 1930's Japan, and I can honestly say it is the most moving martial arts movie I have ever seen. (And I've seen a lot of them.) It also has amazingly realistic action scenes, this is real Karate without wire work or CGI. I just can't say enough good things about this brilliant film.

So that's my recommendation. Has anyone else seen anything good like "Fighter on the Wind"?

Steven Seagal is actually a really good aikidoka =)

I totally agree with you about Kuro-obi. For all of you that have not seen this movie yet, but like "Fighter in the Wind" - do see it.

fighter in the wind had bad camera work. The direction was very sloppy and the cameraman sucked as hell. Doo Hung Jong and his MA choreography was the only thing that saved the movie.

Bloodsport is a fun movie.
