I'm tired of the ignorant uneducated fools here who say Penelope Cruz should had not been casted in this movie because she is not "latina".

Are you guys freaking serious? Spaniards and Italians are the true "Latins" in every sense of the word, a mexican mestiza (who would not look too different from Penelope anyways) is only half-latin, genetically speaking.

God..if you guys are so damn proud of being Latinos the least you can do is read a little bit about your own history instead of making sh** up. The term Latino-Americano (from where "Latino" comes from) was created back in the late 1800's to describe the area of Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean because most people there either spoke Spanish, Portuguese, or French. However, it has nothing to do with "everybody that speaks a language related to Latin in the entire planet"! That would make practically half the planet "Latino" then. Hell, there are countries in Africa that speak French and Portuguese. Are they "Latinos" too?

Italians are not Latinos. The French are not Latinos. Romanians are not Latinos. Spaniards are not Latinos. They are EUROPEAN. They are not from Latin America.

When the hell have you guys even seen some French guy, Italian, or even Penelope Cruz for that matter ever brag about being "Latinos" anyway? In your dreams?

"Latin" was never an ethnicity in the first place. It was just a language spoken in ancient Rome, a language that became extinct a long time ago. So there is no such thing as a pure Latin "genetically speaking" (like the original poster wrote).

What exactly does "Latin origin" mean genious? Latin was simply an ancient language. It was never a race, ethnicity, or nationality. Am I of "English origin" just because I speak English?

On the other hand, if your speaking of "Latin" as in from Latin America, then yes, you can be of "latin origin" (from Latin America), in which case, neither Italians or Penelope Cruz can be considered "Latin".

"Latino" is not only used for "Latin-American", although that's the most common usage for it in the U.S.

Jesus Christ, morons! That one dude is right. Latino, Latina, and Latin-America is made up bullsh!t by white people. It makes about as much calling Native Americans indians. So forget Latino, it's passé and inaccurate. If Penelope and Salma are anything its Hispanic. And to be perfectly clear neither of them are Mestiza.

Bottom line is that Cruz is not Latina, because she's not from Latin America.

I dare you to go over to Spain and tell a Spaniard that they're Latin

If latino is a race, then immagine if Spanihs speaking Americans had a racial term "Anglo" which included all English speakers (white, black, asian)

I am "Latino" if you will, but live in Spain. Penelope is definitely NOT Latino.
Latino is just a term to describe people from the AMERICAN continent from countries that have a Latin influenced language as official language. A cultural term, not a racial term.

That said, I don't think she was miscast, regardless of being Latino or not. After all, you can't ignore the ethnical similarities both share.

You're so ignorant, Latino refers to Spanish Portuguese, French, Italians and Romanians and any culture descended from those people. Idiotic Americans...
