Did Anyone Else Not Like This Movie?

I personally found this movie annoying. I am perfectly fine with a movie that is based on an event and bends the truth a little, but 300 bent the truth to the point where I found it annoying. One of the main problems I had was the fact that at times the movie felt a little racist. 300 depicts the persian commanders as idiotic. Not even the dumbest commander would think of using elephants on a point as narrow as Thermapolyae. Also, the persians are depicted as being so uneffective that they could even conquer a village of orphans and nuns wihtout casualties in the thousands. I understand that the persian casualties in the actually Battle of Thermapolyae range between five to seven thousand, but in the movie tens of thousands, possibly even hundreds of thousands of persians are slaughtered. The second most annoying thing about the movie is that it completely ignores the fact that the three hundred spartans were accompanied by three thousand other Greek warriors. When those other Greek warriors had to retreat, the three hundres spartans hardly lasted an afternoon, let alone the serveral days in the film.
The first time I watched this movie, I thought it was way over-rated. It wasn't quite as good as everyone was saying, but was still a typical guy movie (And who doesn't love a good action). But after the second and third time, all of the lies in this movie really started to build.
I understand that 300 was a well made movie by a decent director, but I just didn't like 300 at all.

No, it isn't. Who the hell is "the audience" and who declared this, in objective terms, just a "badass war film"? How do you know the film-makers had no ulterior motives? And if this ever was the case why do we have a whole army of Greek film critics denouncing it, a horde of historians pointing out critical flaws and furthermore, why have thousands of Iranian bloggers rallied to Google-bomb the term "300"? Why are they so offended by this film?

I'll tell you why. The film is telling its viewers that Iranians are sub-human. The wide assortment of mutants, orchs, the morbidly obese second cousin of Edward Scissorhands, deformed "Persian" courtesans, the goatboy smoking hashish and an eight foot tall tranny queen representing King of Kings Xerxes add up to another conclusion: They are evil and they have no redeeming feature whatsoever.

No. Your white-washing of this ridiculous and disgusting film is futile and disingenuous. You can not possibly have any knowledge of these things and the fact that you are so complacently in denial about this begs the question. It's not a fantasy film anymore than Greece and Persia being things of fantasy. You can not, I repeat, you can not both eat the cake and keep it at the same time. The mantra of this just being a film is finished.

I thought it was crap. The 300 Spartans was better.

Yes I think this movie parodies itself.

I like it in that it makes me laugh every time.

The script itself is hilarious.

It's actually worse than a B-movie but its just that it's incredibly well produced.

Apart form that its a just big budget joke.

So you missed the support from the Greek army in the film? Are you sure you even watched it? This film oooozes awesomeness! Loved the script, the acting, the way it was shot. Such a different film to the norm and Butler was badass in it!

reply

Hated it.
Greeks here went into overdrive promoting it. Notice how Greeks never say anything bad about Greece? as it is now or in the past.

It oozed awesomeness for you. I personally don't care for films that are filmed in slow motion. This film is the definite of all style and no substance.

reply

I feel the exact same way! first time 'hmm. ok action, but somewhat stupid story' secound time i guess i paid a bit more attention and got really offended.

btw. look at what the director has made... He isn't decent he is pure trash. Watchmen was so *beep* boring and the ending was just stupid.
Dawn of the dead again pretty *beep* stupid
Haven't seen suckerpunch but its title and imdb rating does not make me wanna watch it.

I'm taking in your post and I understand it. On the other hand, I'm forever lamenting the fact that the famous battle of Thermopylae was produced the way it was for '300'. Thermopylae was an interesting moment in Western civilization. I personally felt its presentation in '300' didn't do it justice but rather provided 'comic' caricatures of the civilizations that clashed, the events and the personages involved. That made me question the film beyond it's goal of entertainment. It looked to me more as an example of focusing on the 'how' of a film rather than an exposition of the why. Now great films which are 'entertaining' I'd think do both most of the time. '300' in this instance lags much even confounding its producers' goal of providing 'entertainment'. And the prequel will that be done like '300'? If so, it's another dark day for ancient history presentations in filmdom...;-)....

Whoever would have expected a film based on a comic book to be presented like a comic book...?

"No Silicon Heaven? Preposterous! Where would all the calculators go?"

Exactly why it, Sin City and Watchmen all failed. Comics are comics. Movies are movies.

To me it is also annoying. It's a big mystery to me how people can like this. A rating of 7,7 is even a bigger mystery.

The acting and dialogue were so bad that within the first hour I was fast forwarding most dialogue scenes (espically with his wife.. OMG what poor acting).

The first action scene I found interesting and enjoyable, too bad it was basically the same thing over and over after that.

IDK, maybe I'm not gay enough.
