I know the bat was cute and all, but how come it became inelegant? Did I miss something? For ¾ of the film it’s a normal bat, then it suddenly starts completing rudimentary tasks, then it gains decision making skills and opposable thumbs.
shareCould be it started out as a normal bat, but became a tool of the good gods or whatever as time went on. Wolfhound certainly needed more help as he more and more faced the super natural.

Not that it would really happen of course, but in the movie the bad was wounded. On top of that, a bat only way of moving is flight, they can barely crawl. So with a torn wing the bat was pretty much imobilized and it is only like at the end of the movie it regains its flight back due to healing powers of the blind man and the care of Wolfhound.
So that is why it took so long for the bat to come in action, well, in my opinion of course. It makes sense.
