How did he know Mulgarath would turn into a bird?

-Spoilers-

At the end when the kid throws the book off of the house, how did he know the ogre would shape shift into a bird? I mean he could have stayed the same ( A thing that size could withstand the fall, plus he's magic) or he could have morphed into another animal that Hogsqueal couldn't eat. Then they'd be totally screwed.

Did he have preset shapes to shift into ( Like a werewolf can only be a man or wolf) or was it just a case of fridge logic, its a kids film so it'd have to work?

I guess he didn't know. He just wanted to kill him somehow.

It would be plausible, given the descriptions of the book and its importance in the film, that the information that Mulgarath will shapeshift into a bird in such situations was in the book. It would have been nice if the script at least hinted at that at some point, but I do not see its absence as a flaw with the film.

What I took from it was that it was a sort of common sense thought - he knew he could shapeshift into a bird, and throwing the book from that height would certainly cause for that form to come in handy. Plus, if you think about it, it is nearly impossible to catch a bird - thus making it hard for the other humans to catch him and prevent him from getting away. The shared look with Hogsqueal was kind of what I thought gave him the idea - he knew Hogsqueal had an affinity for birds, which possibly would have snapped the plan into his head.

I don't know for sure, obviously, that's just my opinion. I've never even read the books, just happened across the movie tonight. :]

Plus the ogre assumes that shape a few times in the movie, especially in the flashback scene to the last time he tried to steal it from Great Great Uncle.

In the book, Mulgarath fell off a balcony and trying to fly up got eaten by Hogsqueal. Somebody said that him trying to get the book so bad, he probably wasn't thinking and just jumped and turned into a raven and Hogsqueal waited
