Dakota Fanning is awful

Her acting in this film is mediocre. Not only is her acting terrible, but I find her expressions and voice extremely annoying! She single-handedly ruined this movie.

Not her best work but I thought it was still good.

I thought she brought wonderful emotion to the character.

I disagree as well, I thought she did amazing and really captured the character. I felt like it was real and not just acting. And her voice was a little annoying but I got used to it

Her voice was a big part of the way she needed to play the character. I think it was supposed to reflect a certain insecurity and fear, with anger and pain lurking underneath...if that makes any sense. Lily is a character who doesn't trust a lot of people. She is strong deep down and wants desperately to stand up to her domineering father, but there's still a little girl inside of her who is terrified to do that. I think Dakota's performance really lets those things shine through. She does take her acting unbelievably seriously, which puts a lot of people off. After all, she's a teenager, and teenagers aren't supposed to be that mature and focused all the time, like she is. Her poise never seems to break, no matter what, and not everyone likes her. But if you really look at what she was able to do at only 15 years old--heck, if you look at what she's been able to do since she was 6--it's very impressive. A lot of child stars are good at hamming it up for the camera and being cute, but fewer are able to show true range. Dakota puts everything she has into every role and always wants to become the character as fully as possible. You have to admire her dedication to it.

So is it awful and terrible, or mediocre?

With the exception of one scene, I actually thought Dakota's performance in this film was superlative- natural, seamless, empathetic and utterly credible.

LOL: Jennifer Hudson on the other hand......

Dakota is the next Meryl Streep...

Personally, I thought her expressions were very natural. I am an actress myself (stage actress), and I think she is wonderful. She comes across naturally. Her Southern accent needs a little work, but so does mine! I've portrayed a Southerner three times onstage (including Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof--which is a major role), and I still need a lot of work. We are always learning and always building upon what we have learned as actors. This kid is a natural, in my opinion, and she will continue to improve and shine as she grows.

Good job, Dakota!!!

I too admit it wasn't award winning. Trying to think who I'd rather seen do the part.... I think she could have done a better job... E
