Anyone else feel this was indie garbage?

This gets some match up with Garden State.

To me, it's like they tried way too hard to be "indie", especially with Zach Braff. The dude didn't even know who the Shins were until the creator of Scrubs introduced him to them, now he takes the credit for making them big and and all. What a hack. Anyways, not to get sidetracked with that. Who else felt it may have been reaching a little too hard?

no.

I do. I think it was *beep* awful. It had that desperate thrift store indie neediness and I wanted to vomit after watching it. Good call!

I agree. As I wrote somewhere else, the movie is a weak clone of "The fabolous destiny of Amelie". IMHO, it fails completely all its possible goals and turns out to be a very boring show.

reply

I'm sorry you guys feel that way, I think this is a genuinely original movie. ... and regarding "Amelie", it's a relatively mainstream movie compared to "Me and You and Everyone we Know"...

reply

I loved this film -- one of the best of 2005. Sure it was weird and offbeat, but it was rich and full of heart. Far superior to Garden State, whose main character was a dreadful bore.

reply

because "amelie" was better. i think that person meant that it tried to have the same treasure map, lloking for something great feel. not how indie and mainstream it is, that raelly shouldnt matter.

reply

Yet i think what this had was self-referencing

Which amelie did not have...

like the scene where she jumps in his car and he's like "get the *beep* out"

that doesn't happen in amelie.

He accuses her of trying to make their life into the plot of a pulp romance book and paying no attention of who he was at all. And the next time she sees him she asks him about his kids and stuff - his real life - how he burnt his hand (not actually sure if this happens earlier in the plot or not).

And also it's got lots of "now" stuff - like webchattig etc - amelie is just a pastiche of an image of what people think french films used to be like - though i do love it - she has a tv - but they had those in the 60s too.

And it's better.

i liked garden state, i felt some kind of empathy for the characters by the end of it.
i may be missing the point here but in this film the only character i could see any hint of humanity in was the old bloke... everyone else (even the little kids) seemed like they were trying too hard to be despondant and arty and forgot how real people acted and thought. the worst thing about it was that it was supposed to be a love story but by the end of it i felt like killing everyone before taking myself down.
this is the kind of film that would never get further than being played to a bunch of students, god knows how it got a mainstream release.

Not that I disagree with you about this awful, awful movie, but Zach Braff SHOULD get credit for making The Shins big. He did make them big.

reply

I totally agree with you waitfornow, i have exactly the same felling. I´ve already posted a comment in "Damn" about it. She pretended to do a lot, being the new Indie queen and she finally made this garbage nonsense
