It'a a kid version of K-PAX

I think the story ia a little similar to the movie K-PAX with Kevin Spacey an Jeff Bridges. Anyone agree with me?

reply

at least k-pax left us wondering was he or wasnt he?? this movie ends with him just being a misunderstood kid? (but yet never once mentions how he tasted color or wished a baseball team to comeback from 7 runs?) this movie just left us wondering why we wasted our time and money?

K-Pax did not leave us wondering....in fact K-Pax had a definite end which was in the form of "He was not an Alien". I think you don't remember the ending. Prot(Kevin Spacey) was found under his bed in his Cell he did not vanish.

The ending of KPAX was that he was going back to his planet but could only travel back with one person because he could only travel one "body". So he left his body and took one of the patients back to his home planet. He left his body leaving it in a catatonic state, while the one he took disappeared completely.

Maybe you were rushed or didn't catch all of the ending but it was very clear that Spacey's character could very well have been an alien and it was indeed left up in the air 100%.

Agreed, especially when you consider the technical glitch in the surveillance cameras at the exact moment of his "return to his home planet" (IIRC, it's been a few years).

Nope, this is a artists rendition of a true story. The story is about david Gerrold and his adopted son.

I think K-PAX is like MARTIAN CHILD - the source material pre-dates K-PAX. So, really, K-PAX is a "grown-up" version of MARTIAN CHILD...

I was thinking the same thing while I watched it. The story didn't grasp my attention very well. I just kept thinking that the kid was going to go to Mars at the end. Not a very good movie. They could have done better.

5/10

from what i heard K-PAX itself is a direct rip-off of an argentinian film called Man Facing South-East.

reply

Yep, I totally agree. There is absolutely no similarity and comparison between this and K-Pax. Whomever I have talked to; K-Pax just blew them away and left them thinking. The script, Kevin Spacey's acting and everything else deserved 10/10. But with this movie, the ending was too sappy and predictable with no explanations of the kid's extraordinary abilities (tasting colour, baseball wishes) - that leaves us with no explanations.

I think the little kid acted out of his skin, but over-all I was disappointed in the end. I gave it 6/10 just for the kid's acting.
K-Pax is in a whole different league.

God bless you man, so is my opinion!

K Pax is my fav movie of all times, Every word u said here is correct. However, if I had never seen K Pax, I might have even liked this one better, K Pax is surgically clean 10 out of 10, this one gets up to 7.

Is it not possible for two writers to invent similar stories independently?

I'm not familiar with K-PAX nor its source material.
However: I understand that MARTIAN CHILD is based on a short story (which was also expanded to a novel) which was, in turn, based on the author's own experience of adopting a child.

Not really because the emphasis in Martian child is that Dennis is a damaged person. This kid have been hurt to the point where he thought that he's not human. In short, K-PAX gets you wondering whether or not this person is from outer space. Martian child shows a relationship between two broken people trying to find home in one another.

reply

I agree except for the fact that it has been done in a really unoriginal way: the scene when they break plates has been shown in about 3 billion movies; the kid wearing sunglasses because it's brighter on Earth than on Mars is too similar to K-PAX which is nothing like this one - fantastic movie, great mistery, awesome mood and so on.
This one is extremely predictable because it is so slow and there is no real mistery or tension. I couldn't relate to any of the characters and I didn't enjoy it at all.

Thought the same thing a bit as well...

"I'm not welcomed here or there, but I'm here anyways..."

reply

They're similar to a point. But *spoiler* in K-Pax we are led to believe Kevin Spacey really is an alien. In this, we know Dennis is just a troubled little boy. Along with that...this is based on events that really happened.

popthree you say:K-Pax did not leave us wondering....in fact K-Pax had a definite end which was in the form of "He was not an Alien". I think you don't remember the ending. Prot(Kevin Spacey) was found under his bed in his Cell he did not vanish.

What a stupid comment it is explained he[Prot] would leave Roberts body therefore Robert would remain in the state he was in previously. Also the fact he knew stuff people wer baffled by like the solar system/how he could see UV light etc, and at the end also when all camera's went fuzzy when he was leaving and one of the other patients had also vanished!!

not only this but I have read all the books and is explained he is Alien

thankyou and good day Popthree
