Was I the only one to feel sorry for her father? *Spoiler*

I thought it was really sad when he was electrocuted and what became of him. Also, for the record, I do not think that he meant anything sexual when he told his daughter that he enjoyed her sitting on his lap. He cut his bangs "to be cool like her," called her ma'am, and cried about her never leaving him. Moreover, after he went out looking for her without any clothes on and she found him, he didn't try anything sexual with her. He just got bullied and, then, tormented more by his own daughter for embarrassing her. And, to end the movie with him crying out in childish pain when the rattler bites him, leaving us with the impression that he dies leaves me feeling pretty sad for her father. Sure, she tells him she loves him before she leaves him to die but she just does exactly that - leaves him to die, when she knows that he cannot actually be cured with whiskey. Was that her idea of a mercy kill before she ran off with her also snake-bitten and cured aunt? Anyway, I go could on and on about how I think that David Morse's character was the biggest victim in this movie but I would like to end on a positive note that say that I did think he did a great job in his role.

Lewellen's father was not a very good father. He hit her, he left her without a word, etc. I think the biggest tragedy was that he was never able to redeem himself. I don't know if he would have ever actually done that but he was never going to even have to the choice. Lewellen left him to die because that was her way of moving on with her life. She said in the beginning of the movie "I'm gonna kill my daddy someday". She was mad over the way he treated her all her life. So letting him get bitten by the snake was her way of releasing that anger all at once so that she could let it go and move on to her new life.
