Of a friend. The guy who raped Lewellen turned buddy away from her. He made him complicit in her rape by involving him. After, Buddy was so horrified he turned away from her when she needed him most. This is what happens with tragedy. Friend stay or leave.

Of course he was not her friend! He was horrible! He didn't even give Lewellen the ticket and instead took that Grasshopper chick to the Elvis concert, leaving her outside trying to listen to some of the singing.
