The girl she replaced?

What about her? Irene ended up wearing her glasses and was living in her room from the start...
I plan to watch it again to see what I can pick up. Were the cops looking for the the the girl Irene replaced? Or is this flick just one red herring after another and made simply to show of a "style"?

I think there's definitely an "answer" - but I've seen this film once. There was an interview with Jessica Hausner where she said that the intent of the film wasn't to give you the "answer" - this stemmed from her watching horror films at a young age and being scared and excited, but the moment the reveal of the monster happened - she didn't care. You see, it is the intensity and excitement you get out of not knowing. That's what she's done with the film. A "red herring" would be close to explain this film and its "style" - though I think there are little clues that definitely 'explain' a backstory or give you somewhat of an answer. It's just not very obvious as it should be. Its main power lies in HOW it's told. For conventional cinemagoer this style is "boring"
