'What is this really about?'

Am I the only one who, upon hearing this line, had a red flag moment? I totally thought that Detective Esposito was going to have some sort of honesty moment later on...about some situation he's been in with gays, maybe a family or past case thing.

The look he gave Det. Fisher seemed to be a wicked foreshadow.

I loved the movie, but I wish that they had done something more with his character.

Any thoughts?

I agree with you, he seemed to be there for no other purpose than to keep the film going and move the plot forward.

When the case was moved to Homicide Detective Fisher did say Esposito was good (I believe that was her exact word) and the case was in safe hands, so when he starts acting like a halfwit it somewhat diminished the seriousness of the film.

The film relied quite heavily on these sort of portrayals, the police as a bunch of Chief Wiggum's, Christian Fundamentalists as hate filled freaks.

You are right about Esposito - he does seem pretty incompetent. I too liked this movie - an interesting treatment of homophobia and some interesting elegaic music.

Esposito (and the revenge/vigilantism ending) spoilt this movie for me. He was just so blind to the evidence, facts etc that his character actually became a buffoon and very unbelievable.
