When is the remake coming out?

There has been almost none info about the remake. I just know that it's going to be titled "The Spell".. I was just wondering if anyone knew something about it. Release dates or such?

reply

Why should they make a remake?

reply

They shouldn't, but it's been announced.

reply

Why shouldn't they? There's nothing wrong with letting someone bring their own style/interpretation to something. <3 The Ring

reply

The Ring is exactly WHY they shouldn't. The Grudge as well. People can't bear to leave a movie theater without the typical Hollywood ending where somebody saves the day and we can all go to bed.

reply

I completely agree! I love Asian horror films. When they take and Americanize an Asian horror film, they lose all their appeal.

reply

I don't mind these that much. I'm more annoyed with people who think the right way a movie is done is the Americanized version as opposed to the original Asian version. I usually watch both versions of movies and appreciate them for what they are not really trying to compare meaning between the two. (asians have better meanins anyway)

reply

Uhhh what? Typical happy the-people-win Hollywood ending huh? As I recall, The Ring ends with Rachel's boyfriend dying (after she's happy it's over) and they're forced to spread Samara's curse to other innocent people.

The Grudge ends with Karen still being stalked by the curse and her identifying her boyfriends corpse, with the house surviving.

AND The Grudge 2 ends with EVERYBODY DYING!!!

Thanks for playing though, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

reply

lol, did you not watch The Ring and The Grudge... the endings are just as bleak as the originals. Not that im saying they are better films... I just wanted to correct you there about the endings.

reply

It's somewhat disrespectful to remake a film a few years after it's made, knowing that they'll make loads from it, regardless of the quality. And I guess I'm old-fashioned, but I don't see why these remakes feel the need to spell everything out - it takes something away from the original.

And I enjoy the quote! "Crpa! I bez not helping ek! Woof flatulence POWERRRR!"

reply

They already made an American remake of this movie. It's called "The Grudge".

reply

Eh, no it isn't, that's another cr**py remake, yes, but not connected to Bunshinsaba!

Remaking a movie doesn't do anything to the original. The original is a movie, and the remake is a movie. They're not overwriting your original movie or something.

I hope when you're describing the blonde that takes taking the lead roles you don't mean the Ring, Naomi Watts was a godsend to that movie, there are few actresses that I would have chosen over her.

Sarah Micelle Gellar was....okay. Not awful, but Amber Tamblyn was incredible in Grudge 2.

I do agree with you that Naomi Watts is what made the Ring extraordinarily special. Sarah Michelle Gellar was not the best in The Grudge but she was alright and the same goes for Amber Tamblyn. I was more of speaking for possibly Jessica Alba in the remake of the Eye. She isn't that great of an actress and it seems that she is always cast in films for her looks.

Unfortunately I must point out, however, that as soon as the remake comes out, it is as if the original was never created. They may not be overwriting it, but they are surely hiding it in a vault so that it will never be seen in stores again. This is a complete overexaggeration of course, but I hope that you understand my point.

I somewhat understand...but great movies like Ju-On and Ringu would be appreciated far less if the remakes hadn't been created. All the people that saw The Ring and decided to find Ringu afterwards, the American releases of Ringu and Ju-On 2 afterwards, they got more attention afterwards.

In all of the opening credits, they say that the movie is based on the japanese story "_____" so the people know.

Jessica Alba...does a lot of work that is very far below her. She isn't a bad actress, but she's so stunning and petite that she is doomed into movies like Into the Blue and Good Luck Chuck. It's sad.

Not me, i got into foreign films thanks to channel 4's late night showings. The first time i saw Ring, it traumatised me, but i was only 14 at the time (23 now!)

reply

Actually Hideo Nakata directed The Ring 2, Gore Verbinski directed The Ring.

reply

I'm sorry. I meant the ring 2 and stuff.

Incidently, the Ring TwO ended up being the worst piece of crap of 2005... and yeah, it had the typical US happy ending to go along with it too.

That being said, I have been wondering about the Bunshinsaba remake. Last I heard, it was planned to be remade as a series of films about teenagers resorting to ouija boards to get revenge on their peers.

reply

A series of films? wow that's slightly different. Do I sense I small bit of originality?
I'm not sure, but that might merit a good watch from me.

Im fairly sure that guy who said the grudge was a remake was being sarcastic, calm down guys.

reply

Another boring remake???? Yaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwn!! This movie wasn't even that scary and featured the same images of school girls with big eyes and long black hair hiding their faces. How original!!

reply

This is the only Asian Horror film I like. Ju On was hilarious. The Grudge was terrible but Ju On was even worse. The Ring... oh dear The Ring.. don't get me started on that. But I thought this movie was actually pretty good. While it wasn't terribly scary I still liked the plot. I really hope they don't kill it with an Americanized remake.

The Spell?

I haven't heard anything about it

Oh God just when you thought it would stop. I was telling my husband that even though this movie has the long haired ghost its still creeped me out! They all do.. and I do agree that Americanized remakes not only change a whole lot of things and give it a sappy ending, (most times), but also put so much more unneeded dialogue to the stories that are much more about the creepiness and psychological scare factor than the other... but I'm hoping that maybe one day they'll get it right! Also like someone posted above, I do watch both versions, and I have to say they don't compare to one another, but I do appreciate the effort of the remakes... the way Hollywood is right now I'm thinking they're going to be remaking films from Asia, (and other countries) and other classics from around the way for a very long, long time... kind of sad, but oh well I'm pretty much used to it, hopefully they'll get some more ideas of their own some day..........(Off topic):Does anyone know where I can buy Jeni,Juno, Sex is Zero 1 & 2, and other Korean films, but other than eBay or Amazon????

Yeah, this probably isn't going to happen. I think the overall lackluster reception to the One Missed Call remake killed any chance of any more Asian horror remakes being made.

Sure wish the Hollywood film industry would go back to re-releasing foreign films in the domestic market instead of deciding to re-make everything. There is nothing wrong with seeing a movie in a movie theater that happened to have been made and released a couple of years previous.
