Ending? (Spoilers!!!!)

What did you think would be his next direction? Was he resolving to start anew and reclaim his life and family?

I thought this was an excellent piece of filmmaking. If anyone has read interviews with the director, plse post a link. I'm sure they would be most illuminating.

I don't think he was planning to reclaim his family. Remember when he was in the car with his uncle, his uncle was talking about going to see his wife and daughter? That was when Yusef got out of the car and went careening off into traffic. I think he wanted yet another option.

but,gd, the film goes on beyond that point. what in the END of the film gave you your opinion?

He staggers back to his home and searches through the pond to find the letter he wrote to God. Then he asks for another new chance at life.

That gave me the idea that what he really wants is to get his sight back so he can start again. He thinks or says nothing about making things right with his family.

Isn't that where the film ends, with him and the letter in the pond?

reply

gd, yes, it ends w that scene in the pond. i think i was never aware -or I forgot( either is surely possible!) that he wrote a letter to god, and asked for a new shot.
it seems obvious that I'd better see this film again so i know what the heck i am talking about.

but nothing in my sense of his 'true self'would lead me to think that he would not reunite w/ his family.(btw, I am a cynic first and a romantic second.)

I'm curious to know what you saw in his "true self" that would indicate his inclination to return to his family. It seems to me he disconnected from them emotionally soon after he got his sight. He made no attempt to contact them when they left. Even when he lost his vision again, I didn't see any signs that he wanted them back, just that he wanted yet another chance from God.

He seemed to consider them good enough when he was blind but not after he could see. By seeing more he truly saw less.

He does not ask God for a second chance at the end; he was simply reading his letter to God, and it reminded him of his promise to God, which he broke, explaining why God took his sight away again. Excellent movie.

This isn't an interview but it does shed some light on what the director what thinking.
