Dark humor is being done to death these days

Movies like this one seem to assume that simply introducing shock elements into the plot negates the need to come up with interesting situations or characters. Which might have been true at one time, when jokes about child porn and whatnot were viewed as truly out there in terms of acceptability. But in the era of South Park etc, that schtick is getting a little tired.

Overall, American Crude had the feel of a low budget college sex comedy, with mostly unrealized pretensions to social satire. The whole thing about the wealthy Republican kiddie porn purveyor was especially unconvincing. Not because wealthy Republicans would never be involved in anything disreputable, but because the character seemed like something out of a stock melodrama with the helpless virgin tied to the railroad tracks.

Dark humor may be "done to death" but it's certainly not being done WELL.
