Strange expression (might have spoilers)

I watched this series the other day, but English is not my mother language, and I came up with an odd expression that I've never heard of. I was wondering if anyone could help me on this (especially UK or US users).

The expression is used in the Second Part, when McGrade is leaving to the Italian border, talks with Bunny and asks him if he's married. Then Bunny replies what it seems to me like being "Queer as a coconut."
I was wondering if that is really the expression used, and by using it he's saying he is gay, or something else. It's just that it doesn't make much sense (well, it would be a good reason for him not neing married, but then, what's "queer" have to do with "coconuts"?).

Queer= gay
I think it is referring to the fact coconuts are strange within themselves, so it would be correct to call them queer, so of course you can make a simile out of, giving you your 'queer as a coconut'.
Actually, I have no idea but it sounded smart. :)

But why even put this in the film? If he was in fact queer ... how does this further the story in any way? Not to mention that Great Britain was totally intolerant and hostile towards gay lifestyles during the war. Check out what they did to Alan Touring years after.

This was just another example of how this film is really bad!
