Someone explain this joke....

I'm not sure I get the repeated "Sanshiro Sugata" Joke that the retarded fellow keeps telling. It's been a few years since I saw SS, but it has allways been one of my favorite Kurosawa movies. Any help?

It is a mere reference to the film for us film goers and Kurosawa fans. This film is a Johnnie To's salute to Akira Kurosawa, as it reads at the credits the end of the film.

The film is less a salute to Kurasawa as it is a salute to judo. To says as much in the 30 minute interview on the 2nd DVD. The salute to Kurosawa mention at the end of the film is B.S., since the ONLY thing in the movie that has ANYTHING to do with Kurosawa is that guy's frequent mentioning of SS. That's it.

Can't believe people actually gave this a 10/10, as it's easily one of To's worst films. Almost as bad as Help!!!.

Your view may be logical to some degeree if you rate acting. However, several people involved in Judo say the scenes were well done considering the danger of trying to do certain moves without causing real harm. The actors worked hard to do them correctly. The story also was good although perhaps an overused plot. Any story about one elevating their value as a person is a good one and using martial arts to assist that goal is even better. The actors definately could have polished up more but no one is perfect.

Actually Time and Tide... if you seen the 30 minute interview on the DVD (which shouldn't have a second dvd, only one)

To says the one thing he takes from SS is the part where the girl chases the guy and puts his shoe back on. This happens in SS and in Throwdown (twice, mona to szeto and then at the end szeto to mona)

That's another thing from Sanshiro Sugata...

Definitely not one of his worst films... his worst films would be the ones he co-directs with Wai Ka Fai; basically commercial fluff he needs to do to make one of his more personal artsy films.. it is almost a 4:1 ratio...

There is a 2nd DVD. I guess it depends on which version you got. I have the American release (the one that includes an Eng dubbing and a commentary by Ric Meyers)
