Oh my, this is an old post of mine :D.
This is not the case of identifying with anybody. Just writing historical novels, with a character that is arguably a lot more interesting (and entertaining) then your run-of-the-mill hero.
Also, whilst Flashman rises to great fame, Harry "Scud" East ends up dead at Cawnpore during the Cawnpore Massacre, with Flashman at his side.
