Wannabe critics much? This film has a good message.

As I've seen it said in many of these threads, this film isn't supposed to represent the Asian-American community as a whole, and while yes, it does deal with an Asian-American family, you could virtually place any American family in this story and watch it unfold in the same way. Maybe with different traditions, but virtually still the same thing.

This film is about people (not just Asian-Americans!) coming together despite all their differences and the obstacles they face. It's a message to our nation about how disconnected we are from each other and how we tend to choose following the expected path rather than what's in our hearts. For that reason, it's a "cute" and "safe" film, but it's also light-hearted in nature in hopes of touching our lives and perhaps even changing our perspectives.
