JUST SAW THIS FILM AND I LIKE IT...
I am having a horrorfest until Halloween night and have been watching a steady stream of horror for the last few weeks.
I just finished watching MORTUARY and I do, in fact, like it.
It is not a great film but it is a fun little horror flick.
Yes, the plot is thin and silly, but so are most horror films these days.
I felt it had a good horror atmosphere and was well directed. Hoopers low angle shots of the house were reminiscant of his camerawork for THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. This film had a good look to it. A true creepy atmosphere. The zombie/walking dead stuff was okay but done in a fun/horror campy way that worked. The acting was not great but not awful. I liked the slow build and then BAM...the last 30 minuites were non-stop fright-flick craziness.
The ending was extremely stupid with all of that stuff with the "thing" in the well but everything up to that point was well handled and, kind of, reminded us that Tobe Hooper is a very good horror filmmaker when he wants to be. This film and his TOOLBOX MURDERS from a year before are a nice one/two punch on a slow comeback trail after television and extreme low budget filmmaking near-obscurity in the 90's.
Again, not a great film but a good little fright flick from Hooper.
