Underrated Film

I can't believe how many people pan this film...but then again a lot of people thing "Wrong Turn" is an original movie and not a complete rip off of "Just Before Dawn."

It also seems that people don't understand the "fungus." All of the chemicals from the house went into the septic tank. They mixed together and created a toxic reaction...one that Billy was initially affected by ...hence his figure however over time he formed an immunity to it...

I loved it!! Great Flick.

OK, any movie not being "original" is not a knock against the movie -- most movies rip off something from somewhere. Actually, more like 99%, not just most of them.

However, don't even talk about Wrong Turn in the same post with this piece of garbage. It may not have been perfect, but it was very entertaining, including delivering on scares, jumps, gore, laughs, etc. This movie didn't deliver on any of that, unless you happen to laugh at horrible movies, MST3K-style.

Mortuary does deliver on:

1. Bad acting
2. Silly plot
3. Plot with giant gaping holes (yes, this is different from #2)
4. Horribly weak teen girl screams (yes, this is different from #1)
5. Terrible direction (yes, from the Director)

Every scene had acting that was just completely unbelievable. It's hard to really get scared of anything when you don't even get drawn into the situation -- actors have to make you believe this crap is happening!! Mom's mad, kids are scared, didn't believe it. People running back and forth like a Halloween funhouse, yeah, didn't believe it.

The plot was just ridiculous, and I have a huge ability to suspend disbelief. Believe me, I am usually on the opposite side of this argument, so a movie has to be extra bad for me to be against its plot. I won't even go into the plot holes, they've been discussed in other threads.

OK, the screams. Wow, I've never seen any movie that seemed to be one mess of weak high-school-play-screams after another. It didn't take long to get annoying as hell.

Direction. OK, you can only blame so much on bad acting, then you can put some blame on bad casting. THEN, you have to blame the director on this piece of crap. I saw so many scenes with people just running back and forth shaking their hands and screaming, and I was just thinking, what the hell is the point here? I SEE what's going on, I just don't get why they keep running back and forth, and how does this contribute to the movie? Maybe part of this was bad editing? But if someone who was good at editing got his hands on this crap, there wouldn't have been a movie left because he would have cut all of it.

I can see the direction here: "OK, in this scene, you are really freakin' scared. I mean REALLY scared, OK? Like, think of the scariest moment in your life, where you were shaking, like that. Uh-huh. And then you're going to run that way, scream and shake, then run back THAT way, then scream some more. OK, action!"

Yeah, OK, I've screwed with this movie enough, but you get my point. I don't see hardly anything that's good in this movie, and I've watched some really crappy horror movies in my 30 years of movie watching. Man, in the 70's and early 80's there were so many crappy horror movies that nobody knows about now, it's crazy -- they churned them out like cheap Chinese firecrackers. But, this movie ranks at the bottom with the worst of any of those movies, I have no doubts saying that...

Your statement concerning 70s "crappy" horror movies says it all. It was the golden age of the cinema for horror.

"Wrong Turn" was horrible. More than that, it stole SCENES (not an idea, not a concept) but actual SCENES straight from "Just Before Dawn" which of course was a much better movie.

There was nothing good about this movie. It's typical Tobe Hooper: essentially plotless, full of logical discontinuities, violent just for the hell of it, exploitative, poorly acted, manically directed and edited, uninteresting, unengaging. Oh, and if I smoked all the hash in the world, the complete CF of an ending still would make absolutely no sense.

I will kind of agree with the OP

This was not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination but it doesn't deserve all the bashing its getting either.

If you grew up in the late 70s and early 80s then you will appreciate this one a little more than those who have come of age watching movies by Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, and James Wan. It's just a difference in how the films are paced.

I don't like movies by any of the three you mentioned, Knight. As for my favorite horror movies, I like movies such as Jaws, Psycho, and the classic 1920s, Universal, and Hammer movies. I don't care for Mortuary not because of its pacing but because of its insipid plotting, poor acting, illogical and forced climax, and pointless narrative. You're right. Mortuary isn't a masterpiece. It's a piece of vapid hackwork thrown together by a director only rarely capable of delivering something not predictable and cliche-riddled.

The acting is bad, but lets be honest its hard to find a movie in the horror genre where the acting isn't horrible. Same goes for insipid plotting, and illogical and forced climaxes.

Some directors just pull it off better than others. Hooper used to pull this off without breathing hard but I'd agree his skills are on the downside.

Still I liked the pacing and the atmosphere and it worked for me enough to like it.

Yes indeed the movie is good. It's more a kids horror over an adult horror. Anyone get that? It's not suppose to be Oh *beep* horror. It doesn't have bad acting like other movies out there, the story is good, the setting is good, all is good. Relax
