Excellent movie, couldn't be more accurate

If you want to know what life is like for middle/upper class Casablanca kids this is the movie to watch! Along with the great music and scenery you get to see a slice of life you could normally only see by living it.

you must be joking !

No, he's not joking.

I live in Casablanca and I can tell you that the movie signifies the exact way that we teenagers live here. It is very very accurate. And btw the story is based on a true one.

I just saw the movie and found it very interesting and cleverly made.
Not a big blockbuster, but a nice piece of cultural-teenage movie like in a fascinating environement.
Also, the soundtrack is excellent !

not only it's not, as claimed above, an exact portrayal of life in "Casa"; but it's gruesomely slow, boring, and the music force-feed gets on your nerve almost as fast as the inane tirade they called script. i dont mind agendas(neo-back-door-feminist) but this is still an art form put some effort into it...

I've spent my childhood and teenage years in Rabat, Morocco, 'till 1986, and MaRock rendered this time perfectly. To outsiders, that's just a little nice-n-sweet romance, but to people who lived or still live there, it indeed couldn't be more accurate.

Too sad it's so hard to get a DVD outside of France or Morocco. This movie definitely deserves a much wider audience.

reply

so have I, and while I've mingled with jews, muslims, and "non-fasters"; this portrayal has close to nothing to do with morocco: the country. It could have easily taken place anywhere in the 3rd world or france where the director has lived the majority of her life(some might duly argue all of her life). I just cant get over the fact they ruined rock & roll suicide for me, now every time i hear it I think of this drivel fest.

reply

i think this movie has no meaning! no message to the audience what so ever !

reply

there is a message : "this is how some people live in Casa..."

But it may not be the message you were waiting for...

"i can make a better movie about my life here in america!"

Please, do one !

No offence intended... ;-)

But I find it interesting to see how young upper-class people lived in Casa, how they spend their time, how they planned life in other countries and how hard it was for those who can't afford it to admit it and also how the religious part was interpreted by different characters; I think there was a lot of interesting things in this movie ! (but not crucial points, okay)

You know what I mean ?

7/10

it was interesting :)

hehehehehe how interesting to read that you find it interesting !! the story has no educative point to the audience whatsoever! what ? is eating in ramadan is the right way to do ? is the director trying to sway the new generation to that path ! tthe path to modernization on a negative impact ! i think its a good story but it is meaning less ! for people that are commenting , i dont think that you guys are moroccans or may be not muslims.therefore you wont understand !

I'm not Morrocan nor muslim, but I have a few friends that are and that found this movie pretty accurate of what they experienced while living in Morroco.
Now they live in Europe (mainly France and Belgium), just like all the characters plan to do after College...

I don't see it as "the path to modernization on a negative impact" at all.
It's just a slice of life.

Rich, bored, materialistic, horny teenagers are the same wherever they come from. Apart from the backdrop of Casablanca itself, there was nothing of particular interest in this movie for me.
Personally, I'd have found the stories of any of the cooks, servants or drivers more interesting than this generic story.

I'm am from Casablanca's middle/upper class and studied at the same high school that the characters attend in the film, and I can assure you it is just a caricature of what they (Moroccans who do not attend French schools) think we are, I admit I speak more french than arabic in my everyday's life but that's because I've been in France for more than 6 years now.
However, some of the behaviour portrayed exists among us teenagers, it is however a small minority, i'm not being judgmental (I'm atheist so i'm not muslim-biased in my opinion), but again it is just poor caricature.
For the movie itself, it was okay, actors could have acted better though

For relaxing times, make it Suntory times.

I went to the same school (Casablanca American School) as Morjana Alaoui, the main actress in the movie. As a foreigner growing up around Moroccan children with rich/wealthy/powerful parents, I can tell you this movie is pretty accurate although not all of it is true. The movie gives you an idea of what it was like for a rich and privileged teenager living at that time, but at the end of the day it's still a movie and it's meant to entertain you. I thought it was a good movie and it certainly entertained me.
